Scot Spotlight On Lauren Thompson

By Caitie Borchard
Sports Information Student Assistant

Lauren Thompson began playing tennis during summer camps in elementary school and then began to play competitively throughout junior high and high school. Lauren feels very privileged that she has had the opportunity to play at Alma. Last year she was named MVP of the Alma tennis team and has moved up to number one singles to begin the 2005 season. She is an elementary major, minoring in Math and Spanish and hopes to use the skills she has learned to someday coach alongside her teaching career.

A Few of Lauren's Favorites
Food: Mini corn dogs from SAGA [Dining hall on campus]
Drink: Root beer float
Movie: Garden State
Book: Snow Falling on Cedars
Class: Spanish
Teacher/Professor: Dr. Dixon for Philosophy. It was a great class and I could listen to his accent forever.
Sporting Memory: Winning States in high school
TV Show: The O.C. and Sex and the City
Band: There are too many, but right now I am obsessed with the Garden State soundtrack and the group Zero 7.

What are your thoughts on the 2004 season?
It was a really fun season; I got to try playing singles for the first time in my life which really improved my game a lot.

What are your thoughts on the 2005 season?
I think there is a lot more competition among the team this year, which will really strengthen us both on and off the court.

What are your goals for the 2005 season?
To improve our winning record, and be more of a threat to other colleges.

How did you choose Alma College?
I wanted to be an elementary teacher and this is a great school for education majors. Plus, I knew I would be able to play sports at a smaller school. Alma was also able to give me more money than other schools.

What is your favorite thing about playing for the Scots?
I just love being part of a team, getting out there and playing a sport that I love, and getting to hang out with a fun group of girls.

Who is the best person you've ever played with and why?
My partner and I in high school were the perfect match and we had so much fun both on and off the court. We played some of the toughest teams I have ever been up against and were almost undefeated in a season of more than 40 matches.

What are two words that you would use to describe Alma tennis?
Challenging and rewarding.

Have you made any plans for after graduation?

I want to travel and experience a lot of new things. After a few...20 years of that I will find a teaching job and settle down!
