Alma, MI – The nationally ranked Alma College STUNT team took to the mat on Sunday, taking on Central Michigan University, and Davenport University. The Scots scored big wins over both teams, with both opponents nationally ranked in their respective division.
Alma 23, Central Michigan 0
The Scots opened the day against Central Michigan. The Chippewas currently sit ranked eighth in the club division. Alma came out swinging, with the Scots converting on routines seven, three, and five in the opening quarter. Alma nearly scored on a gutsy call eight, but missed the point within two deductions. The Scots led 3-0 after one. In the second quarter, Alma scored on routines eight, five, six, and three. The sweep pushed their lead to 7-0 at halftime.
Out of the half, the Scots converted on routines four, eight, three, and six. With the lead at 11-0, the home side pushed on to score every possibly point in the fourth quarter. Alma swept routines three, five, seven, and two to walk off the mat 23-0 winners.
The Scots scored on 87.5% of possessions in the win, holding CMU to no scoring possessions of their own.
Alma 30, Davenport 16
In game three of the day, Alma took on the defending Division II national champions in Davenport University. The Panthers came into the game undefeated at 4-0, and were ranked seventh in Division II coming into the weekend.
Alma scored the game's opening point on routine two, with Davenport tying the game immediately on routine eight. The Scots took the next two possessions, both within two deductions, scoring on their own call of routine three, and flipping a routine seven call from the Panthers. Alma led 5-2 after the first quarter. In the second, the Scots blew the game wide open. Alma scored on eight, flipped a Davenport five, and scored on their own three. To close the quarter, Alma flipped another Panther call of seven. The Scots won it within two, and led 10-4 at halftime.
Out of the half, the momentum continued for the home team. The Scots scored on routine four, within two, and won routines two and seven outright. Both teams tied a routine eight called by Alma to close the quarter with the Scots up 15-6. Opening the fourth quarter, Alma needed just one point to put the game away. That point came quickly, as Alma won the first routine, routine six, 6-3. With the game in hand, Alma outscored DU 3-1 on routine two, before the Panthers hit back with a 4-1 win in routine eight. Closing out the game, Alma won routine five 5-2. The final score rested at 30-16.
The win is Alma's largest over Davenport in the series' 12-year history. It also marks the first time that the Scots have beaten the Panthers by more than one point.
The Scots move to 5-1 on the season, and are back in action next weekend, when they host the Alma College STUNT Tournament.
