WHEATON, ILL. – Taking a handful of individuals to compete at the annual Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational the Alma College men's wrestling team faced some nationally recognized competition on Friday and Saturday, January 30-31st. The Scots wrestlers picked up some wins over the two days before returning to conference dual action again.
Dominic Gumtow collected three wins over the tournament starting win an opening round win over Lucas Tirpak of Arcadia University, winning by major decision 14-3. After dropping his second match and transitioning to the consolation bracket, Gumtow rebounded with a win over Aidan Laird from host Wheaton College, being victorious by technical fall, 19-4 in 3:47 time. Gumtow would score his final win of the tournament against Cahiel Linton from Mount St. Joseph University, making quick work and winning by fall in 42 seconds.
Cayden Bell was able to secure two wins over the tournament for the Scots, both coming in the consolation ladder for the heavyweight. Bells first victory came by technical fall over Samuel Costello from Elmhurst University, scoring 17 to his opponents two in six minutes and 30 seconds. Bell then added his second win shortly after, defeating Isaak Smith of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, holding his opponent scoreless before pinning him in 2:47.
Alma will be back in action at home on February 5th as they will host senior night and welcome Trine University inside Art Smith Arena. The dual is slated for a 7:00 PM start.
