ALMA — Alma College senior and football quarterback Carter St. John was named to the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Tuesday in a release by the Wuerffel Foundation and Allstate.
For the second year, Allstate is partnering with the Wuerffel Foundation to align two of college football's most meaningful honors: the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. Together, they recognize student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in community service, academics and athletics.
St. John, a four-year starter at quarterback from Zionsville, Ind., is both an accomplished athlete and community leader.
On the field, he is a three-time First Team All-MIAA and All-Region selection, the 2023 MIAA Offensive MVP, and Alma's all-time passing touchdown leader, boasting a 32–5 career record as a starter. He led the conference in multiple offensive categories in 2024 and ranked among the top quarterbacks nationally in passing, efficiency, and total offense.
With St. John under center, the Scots rebounded from a 5-5 record in 2021 to an 11-1 record the following year. In 2023, the Scots reached the third round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs for the first time in history.
Off the field, St. John founded the nonprofit organization QBs vs. Cancer, inspired by his grandfather's passing and teammates' experiences with cancer. The group unites Division III quarterbacks nationwide to run training sessions for middle- and high-school athletes, with proceeds donated to charities of each quarterback's choice that benefit the fight against cancer.
Within its first year, over 40 quarterbacks joined, raising more than $12,500 for causes across the country. St. John's leadership extends locally as well — mentoring elementary students, assisting Special Olympics basketball, and motivating teammates to engage in service.
"I am humbled and grateful to receive this honor," St. John said. "I would like to thank all the quarterbacks who have helped raise so much in our fight against cancer. It is pretty awe-inspiring to see how many people wanted to be a part of this."
His head coach, Jason Couch, describes him as responsible and unselfish, a player whose excellence on the field is matched by his dedication to others.
"Since Carter first stepped foot on our campus, he's been a leader in every way imaginable — on the field of play, in the classroom and in the community," Couch said. "His work to include quarterbacks across the nation for cancer charities, is inspiring. I'm appreciative of everything that he has done at Alma and congratulate him on this prestigious award."
In total, 22 college football players nationwide received the honor — including 11 players from the NCAA FBS, 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and one honorary head coach.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, a member of the National College Football Awards Association, is college football's premier award for community service. The trophy is presented annually by the Wuerffel Foundation to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field.
Named after Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer, Danny Wuerffel, the award honors his commitment to inspiring greater service and unity in the world. Established in 2005, the Wuerffel Trophy is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year. Wuerffel led the University of Florida to four SEC Championships and the 1996 National Championship. As a humanitarian, he continues to inspire leaders to positively impact their communities.
