Alma, MI – Alma College STUNT hosted the Alma College STUNT Tournament to begin Spring Break earlier this week. Alma posted a 3-1 record on the weekend.
#2 Alma 12, Saint Mary's 0
Alma's first game of the weekend was against Saint Mary's. The Belles, a first year program, played a modified game against Alma. In STUNT, a modified game consists of half the rounds of a normal game, with two rounds per quarter instead of four. Alma scored every point possible, while limiting the Belles to no scoring in the win. Alma converted on routine 1 and 3 in the first quarter, 1 and 2 in the second, 3 and 4 in the third, and 1 and 2 in the fourth.
#2 Alma 24, #5 Mercyhurst 1
Alma's second game of the tournament saw them face off with Mercyhurst. MU came in ranked as the #5 team among Division I programs. The Scots showed out, maxing out on points to score 24 in the victory. Alma never trailed in the game, leading 4-0 after one quarter. The hosts ceded their only point of the game to the opposition on a call 5 in the second quarter. The Scots led 8-1 at halftime. The home side was able to cleanly sweep the second half 16-0 to take the game by a 23-point margin.
#2 Alma 24, #8 Ashland 3
Opening day two, Alma took on Ashland University, who was ranked at #8 in Division II coming into the weekend. Alma led 4-0 after the opening quarter, which included converting on a routine 7 call. The Scots led 8-1 at halftime, scoring on all four routines in the second. The Eagles scored a point on a call 2, tying the point out with Alma. After three quarters, the home side led 12-1 thanks to a sweep of the period by Alma. The Scots went on to take a 24-3 victory after scoring every possible point in the fourth quarter.
#2 Davenport 17, #2 Alma 13
In their final game of the weekend, Alma hit the mat against Division II national runner up Davenport. The Panthers came in ranked at #2 in Division II. The game got off to a hot start, with the teams tying a pair of points in the opening quarter. However, it was Davenport who took a 4-2 lead after one quarter. Alma was able to hit back, winning the opening point of the second quarter to get back within one, but DU took the next three points to lead 7-3 at halftime. Out of the half, Alma was able to spark a comeback. The Scots converted on both of their possessions, and flipped a call 8 from Davenport to reel the Panthers back in. Alma trailed 8-6 heading to the fourth. Despite the best efforts of the hosts, DU was able to find their way to an insurmountable 15-10 lead, with Alma fighting their way to a 17-13 final score.
Alma finds themselves at 8-2, still 3-0 in Club Division competition. The Scots will have one more road game at Davenport before STUNT Nationals.
