Alma, MI - Success is on the mind for Alma College eSports as they gear up for their 2023-24 campaign. The Scots broke through with massive success in the Spring of 2023, and the program is looking to build on it's first conference championship in program history.
That conference championship came courtesy of the League of Legends team. The 5-player squad went on an unprecedented run in the Peach Belt Conference. The group finished the regular season at 6-0, and won 5 of their 6 games via 2-0 sweep. The only game they dropped all season long was in their opening contest. The first game they lost would be the only game they lost throughout their schedule. They went on to claim the top slot in the postseason bracket thanks to their undefeated regular season. The Scots made quick work of their first playoff opponent, headed down to South Carolina for in-person finals. Alma swept a difficult finals opponent in Florida Southern College in those finals to win the Peach Belt Conference Championship.
Alma also saw solid campaigns from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as well as Valorant.
Despite not having their schedule finalized yet, Head eSports Coach
Chris Gaumond is excited for 2023-24 will hold after the success of Spring 2023. He looks forward to possible matchups with Ohio Northern, who always fields a strong set of teams to compete against. The Scots will look for another solid season from the Leage of Legends team. In terms of a major spark for growth, Gaumond is looking to his Valorant squad. "I am excited to see what our Valorant roster can do this year with 3 strong returning players and new players joining the team and immediately hitting the ground running"
The leadership grouping of Alma is set as
Ethan Honoway,
David Wolfley,
David Robinson, and
Chandler Calkins are being looked to to help guide this program into 2023-24. Alma also has some exciting talent that Gaumond is looking to see grow and come into their own, with Donovan Salters (Valorant/Rocket League) Aaryn Sylvester (Call of Duty/Rocket League) and
Sean Kildea (Super Smash Bros) all looking for big steps forward.
"I am very excited to pick up where we left off from last year. We had a tremendous year in terms of both individual growth and team success. We have strong student leadership in place and I know every single member of the team is focused on seeing how far they can go this year!"
