Browne Leads The Way as Women's Lacrosse Starts West Coast Trip With Two Wins

PORTLAND/MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Alma College women's lacrosse team traveled out to Oregon for their spring break trip to compete in three games against opponents in the northwest. Almaplayed their first game on Monday, February 27th against NAIA opponent Multnomah, and came away victorious 16-1. Alma then traveled to the campus of Linfield University where they played an exciting game against the Wildcats and came away with another win, 15-10.

Multnomah

Alma had eight different goal scorers and nine different point contributors to the 16-goal victory. Kirsten Browne led the way with four goals for Alma and added an assist in the game. Rileigh McGeorge, Sam Peterson, and Jamie Sherman each added two goals for the Scots. Peterson also added two assists for the game to finish with a total of four points. Sarah Bollinger, Emma Keith, Joanna Scorziello, and Lauren Kenny also added a goal in the win. Bollinger added an assist, Keith added three, and Scorziello add one to all have multi-point nights. Kylie Lewis also recorded an assist for the Scots. 

Scorziello totaled the most ground balls for Alma with five, and McGeorge followed with four. Defensively, Kenny recorded three caused turnovers to led the Scots. Peterson won five draw controls throughout the game to lead the Scots in that respective category. Cassidy Smith saved all four shots on goal she faced and Alexis Norko recorded a save in the game.

Linfield

After starting off the road trip with a win, Alma traveled to Linfield and was ready to play for a second time in two days. The Scots found themselves down early after Linfield scored the first goal of the game. Browne got Alma on the board just minutes later and tied the game at ones. The Wildcats would score the next two to take a 3-1 lead but Alma was able to fight back and Browne scored her second of the game to tighten the game back up. Bollinger would score the next for Alma on a free position attempt and tie the game back up with three minutes left in the first quarter. Linfield would score before the end of the quarter and take a 4-3 lead into the second. 

Starting out the second, the Wildcats added another to take a two-goal lead again but Alma would not back down. Sherman would score her first of the game to bring Alma within one before Scorziello would score on a pass from Peterson to knot the game at five apiece. Linfield kept the offensive pressure on as they would score three unanswered goals to regain the lead before the end of the half. Peterson would bring Alma within two with just under two minutes remaining in the half, but the Scots would go into halftime down 8-6.

The Wildcats scored first in the third to push their lead to three again, but Alma would hold them scoreless until the final minute of the game following the goal. Kirsten Browne scored her third of the game with an assist from Scorziello just over three minutes into the third and added her fourth just a minute later. Browne would add another just under two minutes after on a free position attempt to tie the game, 9-9. Brown would record her sixth of the game to give Alma their first lead of the game with seven minutes remaining in the third. Peterson and Sherman would then tack on two more before the end of the third and Alma headed into the final quarter leading 12-9. 

In the fourth, Alma scored just 20 seconds on a goal from Scorziello with an assist from Kenny. Just under 50 seconds later Peterson added another to her multi-point game from a Browne pass to give Alma a 14-9 lead. Both teams would stay off the scoreboard for the next ten minutes until Kenny would score the Scot's 15th off of a free position attempt. The wildcats would score their final goal with less than a minute remaining and Alma would start their spring break trip 2-0.

McGeorge recorded four ground balls to led the Scots and Ava Fredrickson caused five turnovers to lead the Scots defensively. Browne finished the game tying for a game-high eight points in a strong offensive showing.

Alma will now have a day off before they round out their trip with a game against Pacific (Ore.). Gametime is set for 9:00 PM EST.
