CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Alma College men's wrestling team competed in day two of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament on Sunday, February 26th, in Cleveland, Ohio. The Scots had two wrestlers still competing for a qualifying spot for the National Championship.
Dametrius Castillo started his day against Ambrose Boni from Mount Union for a match to possibly set himself up for the semifinals in the consolation bracket. Castillo was deemed victorious by decision (5-3) over Boni which set himself up for a match that if he was to win, would send him to the third-place match and a spot at the National Championship. Castillo took the mat against Evan Burge from Wabash College. Castillo was defeated by the eventual qualifier and third-place wrestler which ended the sophomore's season.
Eddie Williams was the other lone wrestler for the Scots still standing after day one. Williams was 2-0 after day one and was in the semifinals for the 174 weight division. Williams first match of day two was against Luke Hopkins from Baldwin Wallace, a match that went the full time and was a battle. Williams was defeated by decision (7-4), but he was still alive as that was his first loss. Williams now to win his next two matches to retain the last qualifying spot for the National Championship. Williams was able to defeat Owen Frizzell from Heidelberg in his first consolation matchup by decision (12-5) to set himself up in the third-place bout. A qualifying spot was on the line for Williams and his opponent Raymond Arebalo from Wabash. Williams was defeated by major decision (13-4) in the qualifying bout and the freshman's impressive rookie season came to a close.
The young Alma wrestling team will graduate one senior and look to build upon their victories and positive stride forward during this upcoming offseason.
