OLIVET, Mich. – The Alma College men's wrestling team took to the mats at the Mid-States Invitational hosted by Olivet College. Alma scored a total of 67.5 team points to place them in sixth place. Eddie Williams placed third, Wyatt Raab placed fourth and Dakota Quinlan placed fourth in their respective divisions.
Williams tournament started with a win by technical fall over Joshua Lee from Manchester moving him onto the next round in the championship bracket. Williams then was defeated in his next match setting him up in the consolation ladder with a chance to still place. Williams then rebounded quick and handily defeated Jack Minner from Defiance by technical fall again. Williams took to the mat again to go head-to-head with Nathan St. Benard from Heidelberg, which was his closest match of the day. Williams came out victorious by major decision (8-0) on his route to the top of the consolation bracket. Williams won his next match over Eero Gross from Wabash which set him up for the third-place title. Keeping to the script, Williams won the final match of the consolation bracket by technical fall over Noah Johnson from Mount St. Joseph University to claim third-place in the 174 division. Williams ended the day 5-1.
Wyatt Raab also put together a solid weekend of matches by placing fourth in the 157 division. Raab began his journey with a first-round win over Jacob Horsch from Heidelberg by fall (1:41). In the following match, Raab would make easy work of Alejandro Castro from Defiance and claim a victory by fall in just 25 seconds. Raab would ultimately drop his next match putting him into the consolation bracket where he then faced off against Horsch again and this time defeated him by fall in 43 seconds. Raab met himself with Castro for a second time in the third-place match, but was defeated by decision (5-4) in a deadlock match.
Quinlan, who wrestled in the 133 division, started his tournament being defeated putting him into the consolation side of the bracket. Quinlan the fought back and earned a victory by fall (4:18) over Ashtyn Bennett from Adrian. Quinlan would then be awarded a victory in his next match by medical forfeit setting himself up in the third-place bout. Quinlan was ultimately defeated in a match that was a hard-fought battle.
Other members of the team that recorded a victory on Saturday included: Tyler Demory, Cael Dempsey (2) and Brody Miskimon.
The Scots now turn their attention towards the NCAA Central Regional Tournament taking place in Cleveland on February 26th and 27th.
