Five Wrestlers Finish Top Five at Waynesburg Invitational

WAYNESBURG, Penn. – The Alma College men's wrestling team had a strong showing at the Waynesburg Invitational in Pennsylvania this past Saturday, January 7th. The Scots had five wrestlers that finished top five or better in their respective weight divisions. Alma also tallied 70 total team points to finish in fifth place out of the 11 competing schools.

Tyler Demory, wrestling in the 125 division, placed fifth for the weekend and scored 10.5 points. Demory showed his mental toughness and perseverance after dropping his first match of the day and then rallying back and winning four of five matches to place fifth for the tournament.

Another Scot wrestling in the 125 weight was Dominic Megdanoff, who finished second in the division. Megdanoff won all his matches leading up to the championship bout, but ultimately fell by decision to take second behind Noah Hodges of Alderson Broaddus College. Megdanoff scored 17 points for the Scots, adding to the team total.

Dakota Quinlan added a tally in the win column for the Scots when he won by decision over CJ Trimber from Penn College.

Nicholas Dawson also collected a win for Alma with a win by fall over Tyler Rovnak of Muskingum in the 133 divison.

Dametrius Castillo also rounded up a second-place finish for the tournament. Castillo, wrestling in the 141 division, won all of his matches leading up to the championship match but ended up falling by decision to Ethan Hardy of Glenville State University. Castillo brought in 17 points for Alma during his matches.

Gabriel Sultzbach recorded two wins for the tournament, both coming by fall. Sultzbach added 6.5 points towards the Scots total.

Calvin Huggler was another Scot finishing top five with his fifth-place finish. Huggler won four of his five matches by fall and his one loss on the tournament came from decision in a close match that finished 7-4. Huggler scored 14 points for Alma.

Brenden Kurtze won two matches in the 165 division, both coming by decision in tight matches.

Eddie Williams made his collegiate debut in Pennsylvania and finished fifth in the 174 division. Williams started out with a loss but battled back all day only dropping the consolation semifinal match by decision. Williams battled hard all day with all his matches ending in decisions and major decisions. Williams added nine points to Alma's total.

Colin Fluharty added a win for the Scots by major decision over Devan Gauldin from Glenville State University. Fluharty's win gave Alma 1.5 points toward the team total.

Brody Miskimon finished sixth for the tournament in the 285 division recording a win by decision over Kourdell Todd of Alderson Broaddus College. Miskimon's sixth place finish added seven points towards Alma's total to round out the tournament for the Scots.

The men's team will be back in action on Thursday, January 12th, when the Scots host MIAA opponent Adrian College for a conference dual. The bout is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
