WHEATON, Ill. – The Alma College men's wrestling teams traveled to Illinois to compete at the two-day Pete Wilson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College. The Scots battled hard in the tournament competing with 29 other colleges, making positive strides towards the upcoming tournaments.
Dametrius Castillo earned a win in the tough field this weekend after dropping his first match. Castillo faced off against Kliever Joseph from Defiance College in the 141 weight division consolation bracket. Castillo earned his victory by fall in 4:53 to set him up in his next match, where he would be defeated by decision (3-2) in a tight bout.
Eddie Williams continued his strong freshman campaign as he started out the tournament with a matchup against Jackson Hawker from Ohio Northern. Williams defeated Hawker in the first round by decision (8-5), advancing him to the next round. His next match would be against Jacob Kraker from host Wheaton College. Williams would battle and earn a hard-fought victory by decision (6-5) to set him up for a bout to advance to the quarterfinals. Williams would narrowly drop this match by decision (4-3) to send him to the consolation rounds. Williams was defeated in his first consolation match by major decision ultimately ending his tournament.
Will Vernier added a win to his season at the tournament when he faced off against Sam Weaver from Nebraska Wesleyan University. Vernier earned the victory by decision (2-0) in a tough matchup.
Doug Morris also added a victory in the win column when he was matched up against Wyatt Sage from Roanoke College. Morris found his win by fall in 3:41 moving him onto the next round in the consolation bracket.
Joseph Maier rounded out the weekend for the Scots earning a win over Tashaud Nelson from Nebraska Wesleyan University. Maier won the close match by decision (2-0), moving him onto the next round in the two-day tournament.
Alma will now return back to MIAA matches this week as they face off against Albion College at Harper Creek High School on Wednesday, February 1st. The matches will begin at 7:00 PM.
