ALMA, Mich.—The Alma College STUNT team competed against Davenport University on Sunday, Jan. 30. The Scots fell to the Panthers, 16-13, but made school history by playing a full set of 24 routines with no skill modifications.
Alma started off the first quarter with possession. Partner stunt four was called and gave Alma the lead, 1-0. Next, partner stunt three was called, resulting in a tie and switching possession over to Davenport. The Panthers called stunt six and added another point for Alma. To end the first quarter, Alma called stunt eight, which gave Davenport the final point, but kept Alma on top at 3-2.
The second quarter started with possession of the Panthers in pyramids and tosses. Davenport maintained possession, calling pyramids eight, seven, and five, earning points for all. Pyramid five resulted in a tie to earn points for both teams. Alma took possession to call pyramid six, which resulted in another tie, to make the halftime score 6-5 in Davenport's favor.
Davenport started the third quarter by calling routine eight — which led Alma to complete this routine, hitting all skills for the first time — but the Panthers were awarded the point. Next, routine seven resulted in a tie, and handed the call to Alma. Routine three was taken by the Panthers, but the Scots fired back to take the final point of the quarter from routine six.
Heading into the team portion and final quarter with the Panthers' lead at 9-7, Alma called routine six, which was split between teams. The stunt ended in a tie, with jump and tumble to Alma and the pyramid to Davenport, resulting in a 2-2 tie. The Panthers called routine eight and earned the first two points, while Alma took the pyramid, for a 2-1 score. Davenport's last call was routine three. The teams tied out all three routines, scoring 3-3 and ending the game with a final score of 16-13, in favor of the Panthers.
Freshmen Alex Erbe, Shayla Hengesbach, and sophomore Gabby Berry made the upper-level tumbling routines possible by executing elite tumbling skills for the first time in program history. Seniors Mary Wolfe, Kasey Conn, Alex Loonsfoot, and junior Carlie Scott competed the first-ever unmodified partner stunt eight and the first back handspring full up in program history.
Next, the Alma College STUNT team will head to Davenport University on Sunday, Feb. 6, to compete against the Panthers and Central Michigan University.
