ADA, Ohio – This past weekend, the Alma College men's wrestling team traveled to Ohio Northern University to take place in the ONU Invitational. Two of the Scots wrestlers placed 7th in their respective weight classes: Calvin Huggler (165) and Maxamus Kyser (197).
In the 125 division, Tyler Demory collected a win by decision over Josh Miller from MIAA opponent Adrian College in the championship bracket. In the 149 division, Gabriel Sultzbach recorded a win by fall over Karson Schindler from Heidelberg University.
The next wins came from Huggler who earned his first of the day by fall over Michael Pizzo from Adrian. Huggler then fell in his next match, but in his first match in the consolation bracket, he recorded a win by fall over Skyler Cowgill from Mount St. Joseph University. HUggler then dropped his next contest, the 7th place match, he recorded a win by decision over Zach Potter from Olivet College to secure a seventh place standing and a 3-2 record on the day.
Will Vernier recorded a win on the day with a win by fall over Charles Wilks From Olivet in the 174 weight class.
Kyser started his competition with a dropped match to Ben DePrest from ONU, but Kyser was not ready to call it a day. Kyser then went on for 3 straight wins by fall over wrestler a from Olivet, and two Ohio Wesleyan University team members. Kyser would then drop a match to Kody Krupp from Olivet but would finish his afternoon 4-2 with a win over Trevor Briggs who was also from Olivet.
In the 285 division, Joseph Maier won his first two matches of the day by decisions while his teammate Brody Miskimon also won his first match of the day.
The Scots placed 11th overall at the invitational scoring a total of 36 points, with Kyser and Huggler both scoring 14.0 and 10.5, respectively. Miskimon, Sultzbach, Vernier and Demory each added points to the team total as well. Maier and Morris added points and "Non-Scoring Team Members" as well.
Alma will continue along with their season on Saturday, December 17th, when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to take part in the Gator Boots Duals. The comoetition will take place at McGavock High School.
