MUSKEGON, Mich. – The Alma College Wrestling team had a solid showing at the Duals and Ben McMullen Open at Muskegon Community College on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6.
On Friday, the Scots traveled to Muskegon to take part in a mix of junior varsity and varsity matches. The Scots won 11 and ended up only dropping for on the evening. On Saturday the Scots took part in the Ben McMullen Open which again was a mix of varsity and junior varsity matches.
It was a weekend of firsts for many of the wrestlers on the young and eager wrestling team. Sophomore Dominic Megdanoff collected a win by fall in the 125 division over Adrian Sigurani of Southwestern Michigan Community College (SWMCC). Freshman Tyler Demory picked up his first collegiate win and added another also in the 125 division. Dakota Quinlan, a freshman, picked up his first collegiate win by decision against Kyle Stampfly also from SWMCC on the season in the 133 division. In the 149-weight class, Gabriel Sultzbach started his career off with a win by fall. Junior Brenden Kurtze added another win for the Scots when he won by decision over Kyler Kolk of Muskegon Community College.
Junior William Vernier collected two wins on the weekend en route to a fourth-place finish in the 174-weight class. Freshman Colin Fluharty also his first two wins of his career this weekend, both wins by fall in the 184 division. Sophomore Doug Morris added another win by decision over Mason Custer of Trine University in the 197 class. Junior Brody Miskimon recorded two wins in the 285 wight division, one from fall and one from decision.
Freshman Joe Maier placed first in the 285 division by recording his first four collegiate wins and zero losses on the weekend to take home the title. Maier also went 2-0 on Friday to total six wins and zero losses on the weekend for the newcomer.
"It's always nice to see half a dozen freshman get their first wins of the season, and Maier announced himself as a young contender in the heavyweight class. He's had a great work ethic and commitment in his early days as a Scot, and if he continues, great things will come to him" said Head Coach Todd Hibbs.
Alma Wrestling will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Adrian College to take part in the Adrian College Duals matches. The duals will take place on Saturday, November 12th, and the Scots will begin wrestling at 9:45 a.m.
