Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team held off Kalamazoo College 86-78 on Wednesday (Jan. 29) evening.
Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) finished with six points, six rebounds and 10 assists, giving him 506 assists in his career. He eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark earlier this year, and now becomes the first player in Alma College history to post 1,000 points and 500 assists in his career.
The Scots led by as much as 18 but the Hornets pulled to within single digits with six minutes left. Three straight three-pointers from Zach Sinke (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven), Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) and Stevens gave the Scots some breathing room, but Kalamazoo continued to hang around. The Hornets scored 10 straight points, culminating in an and-1 dunk, to pull to within seven with under two minutes left.
Kalamazoo forced the Scots to shoot free throws the rest of the way; Alma made eight of them to preserve the lead and seal the win.
Harvey finished with a team-high 23 points, the most he's scored since putting up 27 against No. 22 Carthage in late December. His five three-pointers is also the most he's made since making the same amount 11 months ago at Olivet.
Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) played a balanced game with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Sinke led the bench scoring with 14 points and six rebounds while Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) contributed 11 points and seven boards.
Alma held the Hornets to 37 percent shooting from the field in the first half while shooting 53 percent from three in the first half, themselves. Alma's 14 made threes are tied for the most it's had in a game this year. The Scots also outrebounded Kalamazoo 48-39.
Tanner Blyly led the Hornets with 24 points. Jeremiah Vincent added 17.
Alma remains on the road for its next game. The Scots will travel to Adrian on Saturday (Feb. 1) to face the Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m.
