Women's Lacrosse Clinches Win Against Puget Sound

Tacoma, Wash. – The Alma College women's lacrosse team continued its three-game road trip on Tuesday night (Feb. 28) when it faced the University of Puget Sound. After a dramatic comeback in the second half, the Scots improved its season record to 1-1 when it defeated the Loggers 12-11.

Junior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich. / Holt) netted a career-high seven goals in the victory while freshman Nikki Reece (Livonia, Mich. / Ladywood) continues to lead the Scots after recording six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Junior Stephanie Mangutz (Mio, Mich. / Mio-AuSable) also led the Scots after picking up four ground balls.

Puget Sound jumped to a quick 4-0 lead before the Scots responded with two of its own from Frazer and senior Darby Kahler (Coldwater, Mich. / Coldwater). The Loggers were able to score four more unanswered goals to go into halftime with an 8-2 lead over the Scots.

In the second half of play, the Scots outshot Puget Sound 18-7. After six minutes into the second half, the Loggers were able to increase its lead with an unassisted goal. Frazer narrowed the gap to 9-5 after netting three goals in under a minute. Freshman Mia Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) also found the back of the net after an unassisted goal to cut Puget Sound's lead to three with 17:41 remaining in regulation.

Senior Kaitlyn Urick (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Glenbrand West) began the Scot's last push for a win after netting a goal with an assist from Reece. Following another goal by Frazer, sophomore Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion) was able to tie the game 10-10 with 8:13 left in play. Frazer extended Alma's lead by two in the last five minutes. With just 31 seconds left, Puget Sound would score off a free position attempt to finish the game with a 12-11 victory for the Scots.

In goal the first half, senior Miranda Kruse (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Ann Arbor Pioneer) recorded seven saves off 15 shots. Freshman Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue), in goal the second half, recorded three saves off six shots and is now 1-0 for the season.

The Scots will finish its spring break trip in McMinnville, Ore. where it will face Linfield College Wednesday (March 1) at 6:00 p.m. PST.
