Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's tennis team dropped its second consecutive match on Friday (April 8) evening, falling to Adrian College, 5-4, at the Stone Recreation Center on the Alma College campus. The Scots fell to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with the defeat, while the visiting Bulldogs improved to 7-6 and 2-1 in the MIAA.
The match was even at 4-4 after three doubles matches and five singles bouts and came down to the outcome of the matchup at No. 6 singles, where junior Chloe Ramsey (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) was taking on Olivia Neumann. Ramsey played two tight sets, but fell in the deciding match by a 6-3, 6-4 margin.
The Scots had a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots. Seniors Megan Solano (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) and Nicki Malekadeli (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) defeated Morgan Spencer and Amber Laginess, 8-1, at the top spot while the team of sophomores Matilda Ennis (Glenside, Mich./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) and Amy Wood (Grand Rapids, Mich./City High Middle School) posted an 8-5 win over Victoria Watson and Mikayla Herig in the No. 3 match.
In singles play, Solano posted a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 win over Arielle Williams at the top singles match, while junior Claudia Barajas (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) was victorious at No. 4 singles, defeating Watson, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, senior Paige Pontious (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) dropped the opening set against Laginess before winning the second set by a 6-1 margin. In the deciding set, Pontious was edged out, 6-3.
The Scots will continue MIAA play on Sunday, April 10, hosting Kalamazoo College. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Alma College.
