Box Score Olivet, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team snapped a two-match losing streak on Thursday (Sept. 17) afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Olivet at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The win gave the Scots (2-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 MIAA) their first league win of the year, while the Comets (5-1-0, 2-1-0) suffered their first loss.
Alma took a 1-0 lead early, scoring in the seventh minute when senior Katy Stephan (Lansing, Mich./DeWitt) took a pass from junior Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) and sent the ball past Olivet keeper Deanna Zolnoski. The Comets tied the match at 1-1 in the 23rd minute, but the Scots answered less than five minutes later when senior Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) headed in a corner kick opportunity from sophomore Taylor Roberts (Jackson, Mich./Northwest) toward the end of the 27th minute to put Alma up, 2-1, at the half.
The Comets knotted the match at two goals apiece in the 49th minute before the Scots scored again, this time on an Olivet own goal in the 61st minute. Senior Allison Smith (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) sent the ball in from midfield towards the Comets' net, but an errant header attempt by an Olivet defender to clear ended up going in the goal to give Alma a 3-2 advantage.
The Scots took a two-goal lead at the end of the 72nd minute when sophomore Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) received a feed from senior Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow) and took a shot from just inside the box, netting the eventual game-winner.
Olivet would score near the end of the 73rd minute to make it 4-3 near the end of the 73rd minute, but the Comets could only muster one shot in the final 16 minutes as the Alma defense preserved the victory.
Olivet outshot the Scots, 13-8, but sophomore keeper Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) made five saves to secure the win.
The Scots remain on the road on Saturday, traveling to Kalamazoo to take on the Kalamazoo College Hornets. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at MacKenzie field on the KC campus.

Head Coach Ashley Bingaman
On the win:
"It feels great to win. It wasn't the cleanest at times, and we still have a lot of things to work on. Every day is a step by step of what we've been able to put in place, and we are just starting to put the attack more into place. To see that and come out and score four goals is great and gets our confidence up."
