Following a 6-3 loss at Saint Mary's College (IN) on Saturday, the Alma College Women's Tennis team returned home to take Olivet College in a MIAA contest. In a highly-contested battle inside the Stone Recreational Center, the Scots came out victorious over the Comets 5-4 to earn their first conference win of the season.
With the victory, Alma improves to 5-5 on the year and 1-2 in MIAA matches. Conversly, Olivet drops to 2-11 on the season and 0-2 in league action with the loss.
The Scots got on the board first Wednesday, when the tandem of Jr. Megan Solano (Trenton/Trenton) and Sr. Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc Grand Blanc) claimed victory in first doubles 8-3 to give Alma the early 1-0 lead.
After dropping the second doubles match, the Scots would respond with a 8-6 victory by So. Claudia Barajas (Holland/West Ottawa) and Fr. Matilda Ennis (Glenside/Phil-Mont Christian Academy) at third flight to regain the lead at 2-1 heading in to singles action.
At first position singles, Solano would battle back from one down to earn her 12th victory of the season 3-6,6-1,6-1 to stretch the Alma lead to 3-1.
Waier followed with a 6-2,6-2 victory and second singles before an Olivet win at third singles would make the score 4-2.
At fourth singles, Jr. Paige Pontious (Caledonia/Caledonia) would earn the 6-2,6-3 victory to seal the win for the Scots.
The Comets would close out the match by winning two-straight singles matches but it would not be enough, as Alma left the Stone Recreational Center with the 5-4 victory.
The Scots are back at home Saturday, March 28, to take on Calvin College (5-3) at noon.
