Women's basketball defeats Grove City, 75-56

Alma, Mich. - Today (Dec. 30) the Alma College women's basketball team plowed past Grove City College in the fourth quarter outscoring their opponents 29-7 in the quarter, ultimately defeating the Wolverines 75-56 at home in the Art Smith Arena. Alma has improved to 4-6 overall, while Grove City dropped to 2-7 on the 2015-16 campaign.

The Grove City Wolverines led throughout the first quarter and for the majority of the second quarter but a 7-0 run for the Scots in the last 1:42 propelled Alma, giving them their first lead of the game, 38-35, going in to the second half.

Grove City outscored Alma 14-8 in the third quarter but the fourth quarter was when the Scots poured it on, outscoring the Wolverines 29-7 in the final ten minutes. Alma started the quarter down but after a made bucket by freshman Kelsey Wolffis (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) on an assist from junior Kaitlyn Kendall (Farmington, Mich./North Farmington) Alma took the lead 50-49. The Scots never looked back holding the lead the rest of the game bringing down Grove City 75-56.

Freshman Kassidy Blough (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson) and Wolffis led the team with 15 points each and freshman Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) followed close behind with 11 points. Blough led the team with five assists, notching a career high while three separate Scots had the team high of five rebounds. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Alma is currently on a three game win streak, this has not been accomplished since the 2012-13 season. 
  • Alma has scored 70 or more points in their last three contests.
  • All four of the Scots wins this season have come from nonconference match ups.
  • This is the first game that three or more Scots have scored in the double-digits.
  • Kelsey Wolffis has recorded a block in every single game this season except one.
