Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team traveled to Indiana to take on Saint Mary's College in a MIAA tilt. The Scots jumped out to an early lead en route to defeating the Belles 3-0.
With the victory, Alma is now 2-1 in the MIAA and 4-2 overall this season, while the Belles fell to 0-2 in the league and 2-4 in 2014.
Trying to bounce back from a tough loss at Albion on Thursday, the Scots came out with a purpose and pressured the Belles from the onset of the contest. At the 15:27 mark of the game, Jr. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) took a pass from Sr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville/Coopersville) through the box and put it in for a goal.
Wilson then scored unassisted with a one-timer off of a deflected save that put Alma ahead 2-0 at the 32:53 mark of the first half. In the first 45 minutes, the Scots outshot SMC by a margin of 10 to seven, including seven to two in shots on goal.
Not wanting to give the home team any hope at all, Alma started the second half strong as well and took a three-goal lead at 53:31 as Jr. Agatha Weddle (White Lake/White Lake Northern) scored off a header on a pass from Vlug.
From there, the Scots played a smart game and did not allow Saint Mary's any real good scoring chances and were able to keep the Belles at bay. In the final frame, the Belles had eight total shots and three on goal, while Alma tallied seven total shots with four going on net.
In the final statistics, Alma had 11 shots on goal, while Fr. GK Jenna Fassbender (Mattawan/Mattawan) stopped all five shots that had a chance to score. Fassbender earned the first shutout of her career and now has a season record of 3-2.
Alma will now play their next four games at home, beginning with a MIAA date with Olivet College next Saturday afternoon, September 20, at Scotland Yard. Start time is scheduled to begin at Noon.
