On a damp and chilly Thursday evening, the Alma College Women's Tennis team faced off against Olivet College at the Michigan Athletic Club in Lansing, MI. In a contest which saw the match at sixth singles last nearly four hours, the Scots arose victorious 8-1 to collect their first conference win of the season.
With the victory, Alma improves to 3-7-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Comets drop to 0-3 on the year and 0-3 in conference matches.
"The girls played very well today and came together as a team to win our first conference match of the season!" said Alma Head Coach Brittany Miller.
The Scots took control of the contest early on Thursday by claiming victory in the first three singles matches. So. Megan Solano (Trenton/Trenton), Jr. Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) and Sr. Lauren Moreau (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) each posted 6-0,6-0 shutouts to put Alma up 3-0 after the first three matches.
Following an Alma defeat in the fourth position, the Scots quickly rebounded with a 6-0,6-0 victory by So. Paige Pontious (Caledonia/Caledonia) in the fifth spot.
In the match of the evening, Fr. Chloe Ramsey (Vicksburg/Vicksburg) battled for nearly four hours to claim a three-set victory (7-5, 5-7, 6-5) at position six to give the Scots a commanding 5-1 advantage heading into doubles.
Alma continued to apply pressure in the doubles portion of the evening, led by an 8-1 victory by Solano and Waier at first position.
The tandem of Moreau and So. Nicki Malekadeli (Midland/H. H. Dow) claimed match two 8-2 and the duo of Pontious and Fr. Elizabeth Taylor (Fruitport/Fruitport) closed out Thursday with a 4-0 victory in position three.
