Box Score On Monday night, the Alma College men's basketball team hit the road to take on MIAA foe Olivet College in a make-up of an earlier postponement. As the snow fell hard outside the arena, the Scots' shooting scorched the basket netting inside and the visitors routed the home team by a margin of 87-69.
With the win, the Scots improved their overall season record to 5-18 and 4-8 in the MIAA, while Olivet is now an identical 5-18 in 2013-14 and sit at 3-9 in the league.
"We definitely came ready to play tonight," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "I believe that shows some maturity after the emotional loss at Hope on Saturday. Another solid defensive effort, which is only going to help our shooting percentage. This was a very balanced team win."
The story of the game started with the hot shooting of the Scots as they were 36 of 65 (55%) from the field, including eight of 18 (44%) from beyond the three-point arc. The closest the Comets would come in the first frame was eight at 30-22 with 6:07 remaining. But, So. Malcolm Thurmond (Middleburg/Northridge) drained a three with one tick left on the clock to send Alma into the break with a 44-32 lead.
The Scots were never really threatened in the second half as the visitors played a steady 20 minutes and kept the Comets at bay throughout the frame. After Alma extended their lead by a few points, Olivet cut the deficit to 12 at 71-59 with 9:27 left in the game.
However, Alma shut the door in the faces of the Comets by scoring the next seven points and led 78-59 after a Krause jumper at the 5:21 mark. From that point on, the Scots maintained the advantage and eventually walked off the court with an 87-69 road victory.
