The Alma College Wrestling team traveled to Arkadelphia, AR on Friday to take part in the Hatcher Dauls hosted by Ouachita Baptist University. The Scots went 2-1 on the afternoon, defeating the College of the Ozarks (MO) and Lyon College (AR), before losing to the host Tigers.
"We are building on the success of last weekend," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We are looking to get better every week."
"I felt like we wrestled well today against some very quality opponents today," commented Hibbs. "Our goal is to win the Division III National Championship and quality performances like today are going to be necessary to achieve that goal."
Despite the long trip south, the Scots started the event on a tear, blanking the College of the Ozarks 60-0.
In the second match of the afternoon, the Scots faced off against Lyon College, a program with deep Scottish heritage very similar to Alma. In the battle of the Scots, Alma would come out on top 46-3.
The final match of the event saw Alma take on Ouachita Baptist University, a Division II program that finished fourth in the nation last year, and entered the Hatcher Duals ranked second in the country.
Alma gave the Tigers all they could handle, but the Scots would drop the final match 29-16 to leave Arkansas 2-1 on the day.
Two wrestlers went 3-0 on the afternoon; with Caleb Huff going undefeated at 184 and Sr. Jared Groeneveld (Allendale/Allendale) running the table at 197.
Fr. Travis Heller (Escanaba/Escanaba) went 2-0 at 155, battling back from an early deficit to go undefeated.
Jr. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn/Divine Child) also went 2-0 on the afternoon, and made history in the process. In his second match of the afternoon, Jakes would defeat 2014 junior college national champion Payne Hatter of Ouachita Baptist 3-2, to become the first Scot in program history to take down a national champion.
Alma will return home on Thursday, Nov. 20, to take on Davenport at 7:00 p.m.
