Alma Men's Hoops beaten by Hope College 93-82 on Wednesday night at Art Smith Arena

Box Score

Wednesday night saw the Alma College men's basketball team host MIAA opponent Hope College at Art Smith Arena. The Flying Dutchmen put in a workmanlike performance and turned away the hometown Scots by a margin of 92-83.

The Scots concluded the game with an overall record of 2-13 and 1-3 in the league, while Hope is now 10-6 in 2013-14 and 4-1 in the MIAA.

"We had one stretch of a lack of defensive stops that cost us the game," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "We battled back nicely when we cut it to five. We need to do a better job of rotating out of our double teams as well."

Hope led early 3-2 before Alma went on a 7-0 run to lead 9-3 after a jumper by Sr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford/Meridian) with 16:37 left in the half. The Flying Dutchmen responded with a 10-0 run of their own and had a 13-9 advantage at the 12:27 mark.

The Scots earned their last lead of the half at 8:31 when Sr. F Kyle Aho (Gwinn/Gwinn) put in a lay-up. Hope led 23-20 at one point, before the Scots knotted it up at 26-26 on a jumper by Sr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven/Grand Haven) with 3:20 remaining in the half. The Flying Dutchmen would regain the lead and took a 33-30 advantage into the halftime break.

Alma So. F DJ Beckman (Shelby/Shelby) hit a three-pointer out of the gate in the second half to tie the game and the Scots led 36-33 after a free throw by So. G Scott Nikodemski (Rockford/Rockford) at the 18:17 mark. However, a 11-0 run by Hope gave the visitors the 44-36 advantage with 15:24 left in the game.

The Flying Dutchmen would never relenquish the lead from that point. The closest Alma could get was five points at 65-60, on a Krause jumper with 7:49 left in the contest. Hope had leads of 13 points three times and a game-high 14-point advantage twice, the last being 88-74 at the 1:08 mark.

Hope scored their final nine points from the free throw line as the last two minutes of the game seemed to take as long as the previous 38 minutes combined, with the contest bogging down into a foul fest by both teams.

At the end, the two teams had combined for 48 fouls, 65 free throw attempts and more whistles than you could count. But, it was the visitors who ended up victorious on this night and took home the 11-point win at 93-82.

The leading scorers for Alma were Beckman (21), Krause (18) and Law (17) as the Scots shot 48% from the field (26 of 54), including eight of 21 in three-pointers. Hope shot a blistering 57% on the game (30 of 53) while connecting on seven of 13 from beyond the arc. Hope led on the boards by a margin of 32-30 while Alma had more turnovers at 15 to 12.

Alma continues their season on Saturday night when they host Adrian College at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
