Box Score Saturday afternoon saw the Scots Men's Basketball team travel to Kalamazoo for the final game of the 2012-13 season. The Hornets got the best of the visitors on this day by a score of 80-68 as Alma concluded the campaign with a final mark of 4-10 in the league and 9-16 overall. Kalamazoo finished the season with a record of 8-17 and 5-9 in the MIAA.
"We played hard, shot it well in the first half, but we couldn't keep it going in the second half," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "Kalamazoo played hard too so give them credit. We rely on the jump shot and some nights you are going to miss and we probably had better looks in the second half than in the first.
"It's always tough when kids' careers end and I want to thank all five of our seniors for what they gave to this program."
The first half was very competitive as there were eight lead changes through the first 20 minutes. Kalamazoo had a 11-7 lead at the 15:57 mark and the Scots' biggest advantage came with 10:02 left in the half at 27-19 on a jumper by Jr. G Kyle Aho (Gwinn, Mich./Gwinn).
A Kalamazoo 10-1 run gave them a 29-28 with 6:31 remaining in the frame, but Alma answered quickly with a three-pointer by Fr. G DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) for a 32-31 lead. The visitors would not trail again in the first half and was able to go into halftime with a 43-40 advantage.
The Scots hung in there for a good portion of the second half despite getting cold from the field during stretches. Alma had a 58-54 lead with 13:34 left in the game after a jumper by Jr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and still led by two at the 11:40 mark.
However, a 17-5 run by the Hornets gave them a 71-63 advantage with just 3:18 remaining and the home team began to feel the momentum. Alma just could not make enough shots for a run of their own and Kalamazoo was able to hold on for the 80-68 margin of victory.
On the day, Beckman led the Scots with 17 points, including four three-pointers, and added five rebounds and four steals. Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) was next with 14 points and also had four rebounds and three assists. Law contributed nine points, seven boards and three steals in the loss.
