On Saturday, the Alma College wrestling squad competed for the second straight day, this time at the Washington and Jefferson (PA) College Invitational. The Scots had an impressive day on the mats and finished second (out of 15 teams) with 134 total points, behind only Thiel University's 178 points.
"We had a terrific day as our guys wrestled really well all day long," said Scots Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "A lot freshmen picked up the first wins of their careers which was exciting. Matt Tuttle at 165 had an enormous day and earned a championship with a couple of very impressive wins along the way."
Tuttle, a junior from Reading, was Alma's lone champion of the day and had to defeat the number five and six ranked wrestlers in the country to earn the win. He won on a pin in the finals and with the effort today, it is expected that Tuttle's own ranking will rise from the preseason honorable mention spot that he had at the start.
Alma had two second place finishers on the day as well - Jr. Tyler Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon East) at 125 and So. Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) at 197. Another grappler worth noting for his efforts was Jr. Jared Groeneveld (Allendale/Allendale), who finished third in his weight class of 184.
The Scots will next compete on November 14, when they take on Wheaton College (IL) at a match played at Allendale High School. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
