Box Score The Alma College women's soccer team took on a fiesty Saint Mary's College squad on the road Tuesday afternoon and were able to grind out a 1-0 victory. With the win, the Scots are now 9-2 in the MIAA and 9-5 overall this season, while the Belles dropped to 4-3-3 in the league and 6-5-3 in 2013.
"Today was the end of a very long series of road trips, playing seven of our last eight on the road," remarked Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "While I wish we would have picked up a few more points during it, we are still in a very good position to fight for a championship. We know there is still plenty of work to do against quality opponents, but it's going to feel good to be back at Scotland Yard.
"We did enough today to get the result and Saint Mary's wasn't able to generate much of an attack in the run of play. We just seemed to be a step off and struggled to link up on the final pass or shot in and around the box. This is a really tough place to play and got three points where most teams do not. So I am pleased with that heading home."
The Scots got on the board at 29:15 by scoring the only goal of the game when So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich/Walled Lake Northern) headed the ball inside the far post for a 1-0 advantage. An assist on the goal went to Sr. D Autumn Root (Haslett, Mich./Haslett), her fourth helper of the season.
In a game that saw Alma have a tough time generating a consistent offensive attack, Saint Mary's outshot the visitors by a total of 18-10, including 9-1 in shots on goal. Holding the lead in the final 45 minutes, Alma Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell, Mich./Hartland) had to make six saves to preserve the one-goal advantage and ultimately, the victory.
Alma has a league bye this upcoming weekend and will play again next Tuesday afternoon when they host Olivet College in an MIAA contest. The match at Scotland Yard is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
