The Alma College traveled to Virginia today to take on Washington and Lee University in Lexington, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Scots lost a back and forth affair by a final margin of 49-42 in a game that saw its share of offensive fireworks. The Scots are now 1-3 on the season, while the Generals improved to 3-1.
Washington and Lee scored the only 10 points of the first quarter, but the Scots made it a 10-7 game midway through the second quarter when So. QB Jarrett Leister (St. Louis, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) ran three yards for a touchdown. The hometown Generals scored two touchdowns in less than three minutes to take a 24-7 lead with 4:41 to go in the half.

The Scots cut the lead to 24-14 with 1:31 left in the first half on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Leister to Jr. WR Michael Lenneman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea). However, the Generals were able to march down and add a field goal as time ran out for a 27-14 halftime advantage.
Alma came out of the locker room with guns a blazing, as Leister threw three TD passes in those 15 minutes. Two of the strikes went to So. WR Ricky Roth (Washington, Mich./Romeo) - from 21 yards and 14 yards respectively - and the other went to Jr. WR Nate Wade (Syracuse, Ind./Eastern) from five yards out. The Generals had a touchdown of their own in the quarter and the Scots went into the final frame with a 35-34 advantage.

After Leister hit Lenneman with a five-yard TD strike, the Scots led 42-34 with 13:11 left in the game. However, the Generals were not done offensively. They drove 76 yards on seven plays and after a touchdown, converted a two-point play to tie the game at 42-42 with 10 minutes left.
The Scots responded by driving inside the Generals' 20-yard line with less than six minutes to go in the game. But an unfortunate turnover gave the ball back to Washington and Lee at their own 31-yard line with 5:47 left to go. The home team did not waste the opportunity.
An 11-play, 69-yard drive ended when RB Luke Heinsohn ran four yards for a touchdown and a 49-42 lead with ust 37 seconds remaining in the game. From near midfield on their subsequent drive, the Scots' final toss into the end zone came up empty and the hometown Generals had the win.
Leister ended up the day 21 of 39 for 350 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, while Roth had 110 yards on seven catches with two scores. Sr. WR Barak Henderson (Hot Springs, AR.Oscoda, TX) finished with five catches for 174 yards on the day.
On the afternoon, both teams combined for a whopping 1,132 yards of total offense.
The Scots will continue play next weekend when they host Hope College in the MIAA opener at Bahlke Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
