Box Score 2 Alma, MI – Alma College Softball welcomed Calvin University to Scots Park on Wednesday evening as they continued MIAA conference play. Alma was defeated by scores of 5-0 and 4-2.
#24 Calvin 5, Alma 0
Calvin came into the midweek doubleheader as the 24
th ranked team in the country, and their pitching staff proved why. Alma's offense was held to just one hit, which came in the 5
th inning.
Alma surrendered the first run of the game in the 2
nd inning, when an errant throw allowed a Calvin runner to be in scoring position when a single was hit to center field, scoring them from second base.
Trailing 1-0, Alma was able to hang around until the 6
th inning when Calvin piled on 4 more runs with an RBI double, an RBI single, and a sac bunt. Alma's offense was unable to answer in the 7
th, and the game ended 5-0.
Erin Longo claimed the lone hit for Alma.
Morgan Brandau was the only other Scot to make it to the base paths, drawing a 2-out walk in the 1
st.
Mikaylyn Kenney (11-6) pitched all 7 innings in the loss. She allowed 9 hits and 4 earned runs, while striking out 5.

Game two was held scoreless until the bottom of the 4
th, when a single got past a diving Scots outfielder, and rolled all the way to the wall. The Calvin batter was able to scamper to third base, and a Scots throwing error saw her scamper home to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The visitors continued to pile it on, scoring 3 more runs in the inning to lead 4-0.
The Scots responded in the 5
th inning, when a
Jordyn Porter infield single caught the Knights napping, as they believed Porter to be out. The ensuing chaos saw
Lily Malamis and
Kylie Halverson come home to make it a 4-2 game.
It came down to the 7th inning, but an Alma rally fell just short, with Calvin walking out winners.
Alma's offense struggled heavily against veteran pitching, with 4 hits scattered across the game.
Jordyn Porter logged a 2-3 outing with 2 RBI for Alma.
Morgan Brandau and
Julia Duncan nabbed the other 2 hits.
Morgan Westall (7-9) pitched all 6 innings in the loss. The sophomore lefty struck allowed 9 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 8.
Alma drops to 19-15, and will close out the regular season at Olivet on Saturday.
