Softball Falls to Calvin in MIAA Tournament Opener

Alma lost 12-4 in five innings, and will play Hope College tomorrow

Angola, IN – Alma College Softball was in action on Wednesday evening, taking on Calvin University in the opening round of the MIAA Softball Tournament, presented by Collegiate Credit Union. The Scots were defeated 12-4 in five innings.

Calvin opened the scoring in the 2nd inning, clubbing a pair of home runs to get out in front 4-0. After an Alma pitching change, the Scots got out of the inning and answered in the top of the 3rd. A Haylie Alsip double scored Mckenna Salley to break the goose egg. Moments later, it was Peyton Fether who singled through the right side to score Alsip, and a Jordyn Porter double to right center plated Fether, bringing Alma within one at 4-3.

Unfortunately for Alma, it was Calvin who continued to find extra base hits, hitting three more home runs in the bottom of the 3rd, and using four RBI doubles in the 4th to balloon their lead to 12-3. In the 5th, Julia Duncan hit a sac fly to score Julia Nowicki, but it wasn't enough, and things came to an early end, 12-4 the final.

Alsip led the way, going 3-3 with an RBI. Fether and Porter also got base hits, and Duncan walked twice in the loss.

Morgan Westall (14-5) got the start, allowing four runs on five hits in one inning of work. Bella Treloar pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out one. Grace Main pitched 0.1 innings in relief of Treloar. She allowed one unearned run on two hits.

The Scots drop into the elimination bracket with the loss, and will play four seed Hope College tomorrow at 1:30 PM. The Flying Dutch lost to top seeded Trine University in extra innings on Wednesday.
