Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Wrestling was back on their home floor as a host of the Alma College Open. It was a successful day overall for Alma, highlighted by a pair of weight class champions.
Alma's day was started off by
MacKenzie Burger at 109 pounds. Burger won her first match via fall at just 18 seconds, the fastest pin in the history of the program. She followed that up with a win via fall over fellow Scot
Celeste Welch in 57 seconds. The freshman's third match was a tech fall victory over Trinity Valentin of nationally ranked Northern Michigan. Burger dropped her final two matches via tech fall and a narrow decision loss to finish 3
rd in the 109 pound weight class.
Celeste Welch also competed at 109 pounds for Alma. She dropped her first match, a narrow 6-4 decision to Valentin, before being pinned by Burger. Welch dropped her next two matchups via fall, before pinning Rochester's Caroline Martinez at the 1:52 mark to finish 5
th in the weight class.
At 116 pounds,
Chloe Colton was in control for the Scots. The freshman won her first match of the day over Elizabeth Palmer of Davenport University via fall at 2:08. To claim the 116 pound crown, Colton controlled Michelle Sanchez of Trine, riding the 3-1 decision to the top step of the podium at 116.
At 123 pounds,
Keegan Gonzalez struggled early on, dropping her first three matches via fall. Gonzalez then earned a big win via fall over eventual 2
nd place finisher Michaela Dykes of Trine. She finished 6
th in the class.
Jaclyn Dietz worked her way to a second-place finish at 136 pounds. The senior scored a win via fall over Tiffin's Tatiana Bermudez to open the day. She then dropped a 5-0 decision to evnetua champ Madison Small of Trine, before finishing out with a 7-4 victory over Samantha Chaon of Northern Michigan.
Cassidee Easey was also crowned as a weight class champ at 191. The freshman earned a pair of dominant victories, both via fall, over Ashton Francis of Trine.
It's a great showing for Alma, who are starting to really hit their stride heading in to February.
