Box Score 2 Alma, MI – Alma College Softball hosted Calvin University to open MIAA play on Saturday. The Scots were swept by the Knights 6-1, 5-2.
Calvin 6, Alma 1
Calvin scored the first 2 runs of the ball game, thanks to an RBI single, and a double steal in the opening innings. Taylor Griffith responded for the Scots, connecting on an RBI single that scored Jessica Eva. Unfortunately for Alma, they were unable to pull any closer, with Calvin tacking on 4 more runs in the late innings to pull away from the Scots, with the final at 6-1.
Alma struggled at the plate, managing just 3 hits, and drawing just one walk in the contest. Taylor Griffith (1-3, RBI) Aynslee Koutz (0-2, BB) Danielle Dumoulin (1-3) and Avery Vos (1-3) accounted for the Scots offense.
In the circle, Mikaylyn Kenney pitched all 7.0 innings for the Scots. She allowed 12 hits and 3 earned runs, while striking out 4 and walking just 1. The loss brings her to 3-3 on the season.
Calvin 5, Alma 2
The Knights scored first in game 2 as well. An RBI single allowed Calvin to take the lead in the 1st, and Alma hit back in the form of an Avery Vos inside the park home run to tie the game at 1-1. The next half inning saw Calvin slam a home run of their own to respond, and take back the lead. Alma took the lead once more in the 4th with an Amelia Price RBI double, that scored Avery Vos, and leveled things again at 2-2. However, Calvin would tag the Scots with an RBI double and an RBI single in the 5th inning, which would prove to be the difference in the contest, bringing the score to its final resting place of 5-2 Calvin.
Alma found more traction offensively, but were still stymied by Calvin for the most part. Avery Vos (2-3, HR, RBI) and Amelia Price (1-3, RBI) were at the head of the scoring output for Alma.
Daniella Little got the start for Alma, pitching 5.0 innings, and allowing 6 hits, and 5 earned runs. She struck out 1 hitter in the outing, picking up the loss and moving to 3-4. Morgan Westall pitched 1 inning in relief, allowing 3 hits, and striking out a pair.
The Scots start MIAA play 0-2, and will be on the road at Kalamazoo on Monday in a makeup game.
