Box Score 2 South Bend, IN – Alma College Softball continued MIAA play with a pair of games against Saint Mary's. Alma was victorious by scores of 6-1, and 12-4 in 5 innings.
Alma 6, Saint Mary's 1
Alma hit the scoreboard first. It was one of the usual culprits, Danielle Dumoulin, who hit a sac fly to right field to score Emma Fraser and give Alma a 1-0 lead. The Scots would add to that lead in the 4th inning. A Julia Duncan RBI single was responsible for doubling the Alma lead when Kylie Halverson came home to score from third. The game would be pulled further in hand by the team in maroon in the very next inning.
The 5th saw the scoring start for Alma with a sac fly to left field from Emma Fraser that scored Aynslee Koutz. After a strikeout, the Scots used some excellent 2-out hitting to score another pair of runs. It culminated with a Reneigh Sandmann 2 RBI triple that scored Avery Vos and Morgan Brandau to make it 5-0.
The 6th inning would see the last of the scoring. An RBI single from Fraser scored Jessica Eva to make it 6-0. Saint Mary's responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1, but Alma shut things down after that to end it.
Emma Fraser (2-2, 2 RBI, BB) and Reneigh Sandmann (1-1, 2 RBI) led the scoring efforts for the Scots.
Morgan Westall (W, 7-5) pitched all 7.0 innings. She allowed 4 hits while striking out 5 in the complete game win.
Alma 12, Saint Mary's 4 (5 Innings)
Saint Mary's scored first to get the first run on the board courtesy of a sac fly in the 2nd inning. Alma responded with a 3-piece in the bottom of the inning. Avety Vos tripled to deep center field, which allowed Hannah Solomon and Danielle Dumoulin to come around and score to give Alma the lead. Sophia Somerset followed up with a double to score Vos to make it 3-1, and Taylor Griffith then slammed a double to left field, which scored Somerset and moved things to 4-1 Alma.
The Belles answered Alma immediately. A 3-run top of the 3rd tied things at 4-4. The home side scored via trio of RBI singles to level the game.
The answer from Alma in bottom of the 3rd was anything but proportionate. The Scots broke the game wide open by scoring 6 runs in the inning. It got started with a Dumoulin solo shot to center field to help Alma retake the lead. The Scots then proceeded to load the bases up and keep the traffic moving. Haley Pimer was hit by a pitch which scored a run. Reneigh Sandmann drew a walk right after that to score another run. Aynslee Koutz hit into a fielders choice that saw another tally added to Alma's total. Emma Fraser capped off the huge inning with Emma Fraser mashing a double to right field. It allowed a pair of runs to come home. When the smoke cleared, Alma was sitting pretty with a 10-4 lead.
An Avery Vos sac fly to center field and an RBI single from Aynslee Koutz saw the ball game ended at 12-4.
Dumoulin (2-3, HR, RBI) Fraser (1-3, 2 RBI) and Vos (2-2, 3 RBI) led the efforts at the plate for Alma.
Danielle Little got the start, pitching 2.0 innings. She allowed 4 hits, and struck out 2 while walking 3. Mikaylyn Kenney (W, 6-5) pitched 3.0 innings in relief and picked up the W. She allowed 3 hits, and struck out 4 while walking 3.
Alma returns home for a crucial twinbill with Adrian on Saturday at Scots Park.
