Box Score 2 Alma, MI – Alma College Softball was in action at home on Sunday, hosting #5 Trine University in a doubleheader. Alma dropped game one 8-5, also falling in game two 8-0.
Trine 8, Alma 5
Alma scored first in game one. Aynslee Koutz was aboard thanks to a walk, and Danielle Dumoulin was there to slap an RBI single up the middle, scoring the opening run of the contest.
Trine leveled things in the next half inning, with a sac fly tying the game at 1-1.
The Thunder took the top of the 3rd to show why they currently sit ranked 5th in the country. The visitors jumped all over Alma, using a pair of home runs to push out to a 7-1 advantage.
Things stayed put until the bottom of the 4th, when Avery Vos crushed her 2nd home run of the season to make it 7-2. In the next inning, it was the longball striking once again, with Danielle Dumoulin getting behind a ball, and driving it well over the right field fence. The 3-run shot scored Hannah Solomon and Koutz to bring things to 7-5.
Trine would add to the lead in the next half inning, and the Thunder relief pitching was able to shut down the Scots offense to close out the game.
Danielle Dumoulin (2-3, HR, 4 RBI) and Avery Vos (1-3, HR, RBI) did the brunt of the damage for Alma. Morgan Westall (L, 6-5) got the start, going 2.2 innings. She allowed 7 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 2. Daniella Little pitched 4.1 innings in relief. She allowed 3 hits, and struck out 1.
Trine 8, Alma 0 (5 Innings)
Trine scored first in game two. The Thunder opened the scoring on an RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd. Shortly after, the bases were loaded when another single up the middle scored 3 more runs to make it 4-0. The Thunder added one more pair of runs on a double, bringing the score to 6-0 Trine. The game ended when the Thunder singled home a pair of runs in the 5th inning to bring the score to 8-0.
Jessica Eva and Morgan Brandau managed the only hits in the game for the Scots.
Mikaylyn Kenney (L, 5-5) started game two for Alma. She pitched 1.2 innings, allowing 3 hits, and striking out 1. Again, it was Daniella Little who entered in relief. She pitched 2.1, and struck out 1 batter.
Alma slips to 4-4 in conference play, and looks to Thursday, when they will travel to Saint Mary's (IN) for a pair of games.
