Softball Slips Up Against Defiance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Defiance, OH – Alma College Softball headed down to Ohio on Wednesday to take on Defiance in their final scheduled non-conference games. Alma was swept by the hosts, 7-6, 3-2.

Defiance 7, Alma 6

Game one saw a good amount of scoring in the opening inning. Alma got on the board first thanks to an RBI double from Danielle Dumoulin, and an error by Defiance allowed another run to score, making it 2-0. The home side would respond with a sac fly, and were aided by an Alma error to tie the game at 2-2. A solo home run in the 3rd inning gave the Yellow Jackets the lead.

That lead stood until Aynslee Koutz homered down the left field line in the 5th inning. The 2-run shot game Alma the lead at 4-3. The Scots wouldn't hold the lead for long though, with a bases loaded walk tying the game up at 4 in the bottom of the 5th, and a 2 RBI single giving Defiance the lead, 6-4.

Alma chipped away at the lead, with Avery Vos scoring on a wild pitch in the 6th. Finally, in the 7th, an Anyslee Koutz leadoff triple allowed her to come home and score on a fielders choice to tie things up at 6-6.

Defiance loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, and a throw home was just a beat too late, allowing the hosts to walk it off, dropping Alma 7-6.

Koutz (1-3, HR, 2 RBI) Griffith (2-4) and Dumoulin (2-4, RBI) led the charge at the plate.

Daniella Little started game one for Alma. She went 4.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3 while walking 2. Mikaylyn Kenney (L, 4-4) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing 2 hits, and striking out 4 while walking 3.

Defiance 3, Alma 2

In game two, both offenses sputtered a bit, with the teams combining for just 9 hits in the game. Defiance jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored on a Scots throwing error in a sac bunt situation to take the lead in the 3rd, following it up with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Finally, in the 4th, a sac bunt allowed one more run to score to make it 3-0.

Alma tried to rally in the 7th inning, and got something going in the final frame. Danielle Dumoulin hit an RBI single up the middle to score a run, and get Alma on the board. Then a wild pitch allowed a runner to come home and score from third base to make it a 1-run game. However, that was all they wrote, as the rally fell short with the game ending 3-2.

Danielle Dumoulin (1-3, RBI) brought in the only RBI for Alma in the game on one of the 4 hits that the Scots offense managed.

Morgan Westall (L, 5-4) pitched all 6.0 innings in the loss. She allowed 5 hits, and struck out 7 while walking just 2.

Alma dips to 13-14, and travels to Hope on Saturday to continue MIAA Conference Play.
