13 Run 4th Inning Helps Softball Secure Road Sweep of Kalamazoo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Kalamazoo, MI – Alma College Softball continued their MIAA slate on Monday, playing a makeup pair at Kalamazoo. Alma was victorious by scores of 9-2, and 13-5 in 5 innings.

Alma 9. Kalamazoo 2

The Scots were the first to the scoreboard in game one, as Alma struck twice in the top of the 1st inning. Danielle Dumoulin hit a 2 RBI double, and a Kzoo throwing error allowed for the Scots to pick up another run to make it 3-0. An RBI double from the Hornets allowed the hosts to get on the board.

In the 2nd the offense came through again. Taylor Griffith hit an RBI single, and Aynslee Koutz scored another run with an RBI triple to bring the total to 5-1.

The 5th inning saw Kzoo score their final run of the game thanks to an RBI single, making it 5-2.

Alma effectively put an end to things in the 6th inning. Koutz smacked an RBI double to left center that scored a run. That was followed up by Emma Fraser, who hit an RBI single up the middle to score Koutz. A Hornet fielding error saw Hannah Solomon come home to score, and a Julia Duncan RBI single would cap the scoring plays as Avery Vos crossed home plate.

Aynslee Koutz (2-4, 2 RBI) Danielle Dumoulin (1-3, 2 RBI) Taylor Griffith (2-4, RBI) were leading the scoring for Alma. Mikaylyn Kenney (W, 4-3) got the game one start. She went 5 innings strong, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 9 and walking 4. Morgan Westall pitched 2 innings in relief. She struck out 3 while walking none.

Alma 13, Kalamazoo 5 (5 Innings)

The Hornets looked like they had the Scots on the ropes in game two. Kalamazoo led Alma 5-0, and the Scots had only managed a single hit going into the 4th inning. That was when the Scots offense woke up in a huge way. Alma connected on a huge 11 hit inning to score all 13 of their runs.

It all started when Koutz reached on a bunt to open the side. An Emma Fraser walk led to a Danielle Dumoulin RBI single to score Alma's first run of the contest. One wild pitch later, Morgan Brandau crushed a double to left field, which scored 2 more runs to make the score 5-3.

Alma added to the lead when Amelia Price laid down a bunt, and Kylie Halverson flew home from third to score, with Price safe on the play. A passed ball saw Avery Vos score from third base. In the same at bat, Megan Krueger singled to right field and Price scored another run to give Alma the lead at 6-5.

The Scots would not relinquish the lead, and had plenty more to add to it. Emma Fraser took her 2nd at bat of the inning, and used it to bring in another run with an RBI single. Dumoulin then grabbed 2 more RBI when she cleared the bases on a double to left center. Brandau hit another RBI double, and the score now stood at 10-5 Alma.

The Scots still weren't done. Alma had a double steal attempt that resulted in a throwing error from the Hornets, and saw Brandau score from third on the play. Finally, Price hit one more double, scoring 2 runs to make it 13-5. Alma saw out the top of the 5th from there, and the game was ended.

Danielle Dumoulin (3-3, 3 RBI) Morgan Brandau (2-3, 3 RBI) and Amelia Price (2-3, 3 RBI) accounted for most of the scoring output in the win.

Daniella Little got the start, going 0.1 innings, and allowing 4 hits and 3 runs while walking 1. Morgan Westall, (W, 5-3) picked up the win in relief. She pitched 4.2 strong innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 6 while walking 1.

Alma moves to 13-12, and 2-2 in MIAA play, moving them to 4th place. Alma has a day off, before they take on Defiance on the road on Wednesday.
