Box Score 2 Alma, MI – Alma College hosted Aquinas College on Thursday at Scots Park in doubleheader action. The Scots scored a pair of walk off victories over the Saints, winning 7-6 in 8 innings, and 6-5.
Alma 7, Aquinas 6 (8 Innings)
The Scots hit the scoreboard first in game one. In the bottom of the 1st, Emma Fraser hit a double to right field that scored the games opening run, and Morgan Brandau would follow up two batters later. Brandau singled to center allowing Fraser to come home, and double the lead to 2-0.
The lead would be short lived, as an Alma error in the top of the 3rd turned a single into an inside the park home run. 3 runs scored on the play, and Aquinas led 3-2.
The Scots played small ball in the middle innings as the teams played tug of war with the lead. An RBI single from Danielle Dumoulin, and a sac fly from Brandau allowed Alma to take the lead in the bottom of the 5th, while a 2-run homer saw Aquinas take it right back in the top of the 6th. Jessica Eva singled home a run in the bottom of the 6th to tie up the game, just to have Aquinas grab it in the top of the 7th. A Julia Duncan RBI single tied things at the death to send the game to extras.
The Scots got out of a spot in the top of the 8th, while things came to a head in the bottom. With Jessica Eva standing on third, Aquinas opted to intentionally walk the bases loaded, bringing up Dumoulin. She hit a single into left field, and Eva scored to end the game.
Danielle Dumoulin played hero, going 3-5 with a pair of RBI in the contest. Emma Fraser also went 2-4 in the game with an RBI, and Morgan Brandau also collected a pair of RBI to go with her 2-3 game. Mikaylyn Kenney pitched all 8.0 innings in the W, and the win brings her to 3-2 on the year. She allowed 9 hits, and struck out 5 while walking 3.
Alma 6, Aquinas 5
Once again Alma scored first in game two. Reneigh Sandmann hit a single in the bottom of the 2nd to score the game's opening run, and Hannah Solomon followed it up soon after with a double that scored one more Scot.
Aquinas responded with a long solo home run to get on the board in the top of the 3rd, and tied the game up soon after with an RBI single. It wouldn't remain tied for long, as an Emma Fraser double in the next half inning put Alma back in front. Just moments later, Sandmann came through with another double to extend Alma's lead to 4-2. The Scots weren't done yet. In the bottom of the 5th, Morgan Brandau hit an RBI single that would push the lead to 5-2.
The Saints weren't just going to give up, and they answered big time, scoring 3 runs to tie up the game at the last moment. Things would go to the bottom of the 7th, when a Morgan Brandau single was aided by a fielding error that allowed Fraser to come all the way around from 1st and end the game.
Taylor Griffith went 2-3 in the game, and was joined by Reneigh Sandmann and Morgan Brandau in the 2-3 game. Brandau and Sandmann also accounted for 2 RBI apiece. Daniella Little got the start in game two. She went 6.2 while striking out 5 and walking 3. Morgan Westall pitched in relief. She entered in the 7th, struck out the only batter she faced, and picked up the win to move to 4-2 on the season.
Alma will be on the road on Saturday as they wrap up their non-conference slate against U Chicago.
