Box Score 2 Alma, MI – Alma College Softball welcomed Heidelberg for a doubleheader on Friday at Scots park. The visitors picked up both decisions over the Scots with scores of 8-6, and 5-1.
Heidelberg 8, Alma 6
The visitors got on the scoreboard first in game one, bringing home a run in the 2nd inning, before tacking on 3 more in the 3rd to make it 4-0. Alma responded in the 4th inning, when a Heidelberg throwing error on a steal attempt allowed for Jessica Eva to scamper home from third base and get the Scots on the board. Emma Fraser immediately singled up the middle, and Taylor Griffith scored. The next play saw Danielle Dumoulin double down the right field line, with Fraser coming around to score. Alma backed that up with a 4th straight scoring play to tie the game at 4-4 on a Morgan Brandau single.
Heidelberg tacked on 4 more runs in the 5th inning, and the Scots found their backs against the wall in the 7th. Alma used another double steal from Eva to help score Amelia Price from third base, cutting the defecit to 8-5. Then Jenna Holzinger would hit sac fly to get Eva home and make it 8-6. With the tying run at the plate, with rally fell just a few feet short, as a spectacular running catch on the warning track ended the ball game.
Emma Fraser was 2-4 with an RBI, and Jessica Eva had a 2-3 ball game to lead the offensive efforts for Alma. Daniella Little picked up the loss, pitching 4.0 innings, and striking out 2 while walking 0.
Heidelberg 5, Alma 1
Alma struggled to find offense in game two, and was met by a hot pitcher in Jessica Voitko. She commanded her off-speed pitch well, and it gave Alma's offense fits.
Alma scored the opening run of the game in the bottom of the first. Emma Fraser was caught in a rundown, but survived long enough for Taylor Griffith to score from third base before she was tagged out to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. This was the only run that Alma scored in the game, as Heidelberg gradually picked up 5 runs to pull away from the Scots.
Mikaylyn Kenney got her first start at Scots Park, and went the full 7.0 innings in her home debut. The freshman allowed 10 hits, and struck out 4 while walking 1 and giving up 4 earned runs.
Taylor Griffith continued to carry a hot bat in game two, going 2-3 and coming around to score, also swiping a pair of bases in the loss. Emma Fraser collected Alma's 3rd hit of the game in a 1-3 contest.
Alma drops to 7-6 on the young season, and looks to bounce back against Anderson on Sunday at home. First pitch of game 1 is set for 2 PM.
