Box Score Springfield, OH – Alma College Softball took to the road on Tuesday to head down to Ohio, taking on Wittenberg. Alma scored an epic comback win in game one, and was ahead in game two before the game was suspended due to darkness.
Game 1 – Alma 5, Wittenberg 3 (10 Innings)
The first 3 innings of game one went scoreless, with both pitchers working out of a few tight situations. The Scots would strike first in the top of the 4th inning. Emma Fraser singled, and Kylie Halverson was brought in to pinch run. She stole second, and was able to score on a Morgan Brandau single to right field. The Tigers found a way to tie things up in the bottom of the 4th inning at 1 all. Wittenberg scratched across a pair of runs in the bottom of the 5th to take their first lead of the day at 3-1.
Alma tried to rally late in the 7th, finding themselves with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Emma Fraser singled up the middle to score Jessica Eva from second, and a Danielle Dumoulin single would tie the ball game up on the very next at bat. The Scots forced extras with the rally.
Both teams had a good look at scoring in the 8th and 9th, but stranded their runners. In the 10th, Fraser was aboard, and once again it was the bat of Dumoulin that struck with a single to score her from 2nd, aided by an error from the Tigers. A swiped bag and a Brandau single later helped Dumoulin be in position for Aynslee Koutz to score her in from 3rd. The Scots shut things down in the bottom of the 10th to close out the game.
Emma Fraser was the leading hitter for Alma, going 4-5 with 2 RBI, and Danielle Dumoulin played hero, scoring both the tying, and go-ahead runs in the contest.
Daniella Little got the start, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing 8 hits and striking out 5 while walking 1. Mikaylyn Kenney came in in relief and was lights out. Over 5.2 innings of work, Kenney struck out 7, walked 3, and allowed 0 hits to pick up the win.
Game 2 – Alma 12, Wittenberg 7 (3.5 Innings, Halted Due to Darkness)
The Scots jumped out to an early lead in game 2. Alma had the bases loaded in the top of the 1st, and Morgan Brandau singled up the middle to drive in a run, and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Scots added a pair of runs in the 2nd inning, when a Taylor Griffith double allowed a pair of runs to score, and a wild pitch later in the inning helped her to come home as well, setting the score at 3-0. Wittenberg hit back hard in the bottom of the 2nd. The Tigers struck for 7 runs to take the lead 7-3.
The top of the third saw Alma pile on the offense. Avery Vos got the inning started with a home run to lead off the side. Later in the inning, A Griffith hit into a fielder's choice, scoring a run. The very next batter was Jenna Holzinger, who singled home a run, and just a few hitters later, Brandau smoked a shot down the left field line allowing 3 more Scots to score. Finally, Vos, who opened the inning with a homer, smacked another ball to the outfield, scoring a runner, and coming all the way around to score herself on the play. When the dust finally settled, Alma led 12-7.
The bottom of the third and top of the 4th went by uneventfully, with the game being called due to darkness after 3.5 innings. The game remains suspended, and a make up date may be decided on later in the season.
