Box Score 2 Winter Haven, FL – Alma College Softball got back on the diamond on Thursday after a day off in Florida. The Scots played Wartburg in doubleheader action. The 14th ranked Knights defeated the Scots in both games.
#14 Wartburg 4, Alma 3
The Scots scored first, with Taylor Griffith doubling to bring home Emma Fraser in the top of the 1st inning, giving Alma a 1-0 lead. The lead would remain at 1 for several innings, until a Danielle Dumoulin home run scored Laiken Ex, and pushed the lead to 3-0. Wartburg responded, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 5thinning to tie the game up. The teams were deadlocked into the 7th, where Wartburg scored the winning run on a walk-off single.
Fraser (2-3) was the leader at the plate for Alma. She was joined by Griffith (1-3, RBI), and Dumoulin (1-3, HR, 2 RBI) in the offensive effort. Daniella Little got the start in the circle for Alma. She went 5 strong innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6. Morgan Westall pitched 1.2 innings in relief. She struck out 2 batters in her appearance.
#14 Wartburg 9, Alma 2
In game two, the Knights jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the 2nd. The Scots answered in the bottom of the 3rd, when Taylor Griffith hit her 2nd home run of the season to get Alma on the board. It was tough sledding for the Scots in game two, as Wartburg piled on 3 more runs in the middle innings to make it 7-1. The Scots would strike once more in the bottom half of inning number 6. Julia Duncan hit into a double play. Allowing Emily Dimock to scamper home and score the second run of the game for Alma. Wartburg grabbed two more runs in the 7th, which brought the score to its final of 9-2.
Emma Fraser once again was the name leading the Alma efforts with the bats. Her 2-3 contest accounted for 2 of the 3 hits that Alma managed against a talented Wartburg pitching staff in game two. The other hit belonged to Taylor Griffith (1-3) on her solo homer.
Mikaylyn Kenney got the start for Alma in game two. She pitched 6 complete innings, allowing striking out a pair of batters in her outing. Megan Krueger also struck out 2 in relief, as she pitched the 7th frame for Alma.
The Scots will look to rebound tomorrow as they round out their Florida trip with games against Houghton and Russell Sage.
