Softball Scores Dramatic Comeback Win in Day 3 Action in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Winter Haven, FL – Alma College Softball hit the field for the third day of action at the Spring Games. Alma won their first game in dramatic comeback fashion over Saint Mary's (MN) 10-8, before dropping their second contest to Eastern by a final of 5-2.

Alma 10, Saint Mary's (MN) 8 – 8 Innings

The Scots fell behind early in this one. The Cardinals got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the 1stinning. Alma responded in the top of the 3rd to take the lead. Emma Fraser doubled to bring home Jessica Eva, and Avery Vos. Shortly later, Fraser was brought home off the basepaths when Taylor Griffith slammed out a home run to give Alma a 4-2 advantage. SMU turned around, scoring 6 runs over the next 2 innings to take a 4 run lead. Heading to the 7th, Alma trailed 8-4. The Scots opened the inning with back to back home runs from Aynslee Koutz and Vos. 4 Batters later, Taylor Griffith singled to score Fraser and Eva, tying the game at 8-8. The Scots kept the offense going in the eighth, with Holzinger reaching on an error that allowed Danielle Dumoulin to score. Julia Duncan brought home one more run in the frame to make the score 10-8, and Alma locked it down to secure the win.

Taylor Griffith did the most damage for Alma. Her 2-4 game resulted in 4 RBI for the Scots. Also aiding the scoring was Fraser (2-4, 2 RBI), Vos (2-4, RBI), Koutz (1-4, RBI), and Duncan (1-1, RBI).

Daniella Little started for Alma, going 3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs. Reneigh Sandmann picked up the win in relief. She went 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 5.

Eastern 5, Alma 2

In game two, Alma took on Eastern. The Scots scored first, with Griffith scampering home on a wild pitch. The offenses both went silent for several innings, with Eastern finally waking up in the 5th inning. The Eagles scored 5 runs in the frame that would prove to be the difference in the game. The Scots would score one more time in the 6th inning, when an error allowed Vos to score, closing the gap to just 3 runs. However, this is the closest that the two teams would come, with Eastern closing out the game at 5-2.

Griffith (1-3, RBI) led the scoring for Alma. She was joined by Sophia Somorset (2-3) and Jessica Eva (2-3) on the offensive side. Megan Krueger started the game for Alma. She went 4.2, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs, while walking 2 and striking out 3. Mikaylyn Kenney pitched in relief, going 2.1 innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 3.

The Scots will see Wartburg twice tomorrow. The Knights are looking for another strong start after being eliminated in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Division III Tournament last season.
