Offensive Explosion Powers Softball to Day 2 Sweep in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Winter Haven, FL – Alma College Softball picked up a pair of wins on Monday in Florida. After managing just 4 total runs yesterday, the Alma offense exploded for a 26 runs over a 2 game span. The Scots took down Bridgewater State by a final of 10-3, before the offense really went to work in a 16-7 decision over Chatham.

Alma 10, Bridgewater State 3

The Scots opened their day against Bridgewater State. Alma opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, wen Morgan Brandau singled to bring home Taylor Griffith, and give the Scots a 1-0 lead. The Eagles responded with a solo homer in the 2nd to tie the game up. Alma then pulled away over the next few innings. In the 2nd, Emma Fraser grounded into a fielders choice, allowing Avery Vos to score from third base to give Alma another lead.

Alma would strike again in the 3rd, when an Eagles error allowed a pair of runs to score from a bases loaded situation. Jenna Holzinger helped Alma to score once more in the 4th inning. She singled, allowing Griffith and Fraser to come around and touch home to push the lead to 6-1.

The 5th went by quiety, before Bridgewater St. scored a pair of runs in the 6th inning. Alma responded in the bottom half of the frame, with 2 more runs from Holzinger, and a pair of runs from Aynslee Koutz. That capped the scoring at 10-3.

Holzinger led the offense for Alma, with a 3-4 game at the plate, knocking in 4 RBI. Aynslee Koutz, Jessica Eva, and Avery Vos also joined in the scoring with 2 RBI.

Morgan Westwall went the full 7 innings in the circle. She allowed just 5 hits, and 3 runs (1 earned) while striking out 4 and walking 2.

Alma 16, Chatham 7

The second game saw another offensive explosion from the Scots. Alma jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first, largely due to 3 fielding errors committed by Chatham. The Scots needed only 2 hits to score the 8 runs in the opening frame. Morgan Brandau hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to score the first run of the contest. Sophia Somerset later singled in the inning to score 2 more runs. Still in the first, a passed ball led to another Alma run to make the score 4-0, and an error on the ensuing play allowed 2 more Scots to get to home plate, making it 6-0. 2 more runs would score before the inning was over to make it 8-0.

The second inning saw Alma pour it on. Rather than errors, the Scots offense fueled another big 7 run inning. The Scots used 5 hits to bring runners around, and keep the basepaths occupied. Chatham scraped across a run in the bottom of the inning, but Alma responded via a Taylor Griffith solo home run in the top of the 3rd to make the score 16-1. After the dust settled, Alma's offense allowed them to cruise to a 16-7 victory.

The Scots stole 10 bases in the game, including 3 swiped bags from Hannah Solomon. Emma Fraser had a great game two, with a line of 3-4, 1 walk drawn, and 2 RBI. Also playing a big role in the scoring effort was Danielle Dumoulin (2 RBI) Sophia Somerset (3 RBI) Haley Pimer (2 RBI) Hannah Solomon (2 RBI), and Laiken Ex (2 RBI).

Mikaylyn Kenney picked up the win in the circle. She pitched 3.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 8 while walking 2.

Alma looks to ride the momentum from today's offensive explosion into their next pair of games against St. Mary's College (MN) and Eastern tomorrow.
