Box Score Ann Arbor, MI – Alma College Men's Soccer took on Concordia University Ann-Arbor in their season opening match of 2022. The Scots got off to a winning start with the final score line reading 3-1.
The first half did not go Alma's way, with the Cardinals putting Keeper Chris Henry under stress to the tune of 9 shots. CUAA's Bryce Ferrin intercepted a ball up the middle, and Henry finally cracked allowing a goal from 18 yards out in the 44th minute. The Scots would enter halftime trailing 1-0.
Coming out of the half, the Alma offense came alive, and in the 52nd minute Jack Lockerbie would capitalize off a corner kick from Joe Rawlin to level things at 1 goal apiece. Under 3 minutes later a Scots cross would deflect off a Cardinal defender and end up in the back of the net to give Alma the lead. It wouldn't take the Scots long to find an insurance marker. Christian Sweis' near side shot in the 67th minute would deflect off of a defender and find the twine to put the score at 3-1 Alma, where it would stay until the final whistle.
Overall, the Scots were outshot 15-14 on the day. However, Alma was the better squad in the accuracy department, with 11 of their 14 shots on target compared to just 5 of 15 for Ann Arbor.
In the net, Henry had 4 saves on 5 shots on goal and picked up his first win of the season, moving to 1-0. Kyri Wixom stopped 8 of 11 shots on target and picked up the loss for CUAA, dropping to 0-1.
Offensively, the Scots were led by goal scorers Lockerbie (1), and Sweis (1), with an assist on the day going to Rawlin (1). Sweis was the leading attacker on the day, with 3 shots, 2 of which were on target, and 1 goal.
Alma improves to 1-0 on the season, and will be in action on Monday, September 5th at Illinois Tech.
