Alma grabs two wins to advance in NCAA Tournament

Decatur, Ill.- The Alma College softball team continued play at Millikin University on Saturday, May 14 for regionals in the 2022 NCAA Division III softball tournament. The Scots beat Ohio Northern University, 4-1, and Illinois College, 3-1. 

Haley Ullrich (Elk River, MN) started the top of the first inning against ONU with a single to left field followed by single to shortstop from Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, MI) for Ullrich to advance to second. Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattan, IL) reached first on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, MI) then doubled to right center for Griffith to run home, 1-0. 

Alma continued scoring in the top of the second, with runners on second and third, Ullrich grounded out but brought Chloe Deckrow (Grandville, MI) in for the run, 2-0. 

The third inning brought a run in off a single from the Deckrow for Emma Fraser (Alpena, MI) to score, 3-0. The Polar Bears added their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth off a throwing error, 3-1. 

The Scots scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning with another hit form Deckrow for Fleming to run in for a final score of 4-1. 

Deckrow and Fleming each had three hits and one run. Ullrich posted six strikeouts, allowed six hits, and only one run. 

The second game of the day was started by Illinois College in the second inning with a single to left field to bring one run in, 1-0. 

The third through fifth innings were unanswered by either team. Fleming started the sixth inning with a single up the middle followed by a bunt from Fraser. Falejczyk then changed the outcome of the game with a home run to bring three runs in for a final score of 3-1. 

Fraser led with three hits and one run while Fleming and Falejcsyk each added one hit. Ullrich had one strikeout with no hits or runs for her one inning pitched. Daniella Little (Wheaton, IL) allowed only three hits and one run. 

Next, Alma faces Millikin University on Sunday, May 15 at 12:00 p.m. for the next round of the NCAA softball tournament.
