Box Score 1 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Alma College softball team traveled to Calvin University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5. The Scots split the day with a 2-6 loss in the first game and followed with a 6-2 win.
The first game was off to a quick start with a single up the middle from Haley Ullrich (Elk River, MN). Emma Fraser (Alpena, MI) followed suit with another single to advance Ullrich to second. Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattan, IL) reached first off an error by third base to put Ullrich in a scoring position. Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, MI) brought in Ullrich off a fielder's choice for a score of 1-0 at the end of the first inning.
The second inning was untouched by either team, but the Knights found their footing in the third inning with one run off a pitching error. Calvin continued their scoring streak in the fourth and fifth inning to add three more runs to the board at 4-1.
The top of the sixth inning started off with a double from Fleming that allowed her to advance to third of a wild pitch from Calvin. Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, MI) grabbed a single and an RBI to bring Fleming to home plate, 4-2.
The Knights continued their push forward in the bottom of the sixth with two hits to bring two runs in. No runs were recorded in the seventh inning for a final score of 6-2 in Calvin's favor.
Fleming led with one run, two hits, and an RBI. Terwilliger also added one hit and one RBI, while Ullrich threw four strikeouts.
The first two innings of the second game were unanswered by either team. It was not until the bottom of the third inning that Falejczyk doubled to left center to bring Fraser and Ullrich home, 2-0. Amellia Thorne (Grand Ledge, M) pinch ran for Falejczyk and immediately scored off a single from Fleming, 3-0. Fleming advanced to second off a single from Terwilliger. Amelia Price (Milford, MI) doubled to center field and advanced to third for an RBI allowing Fleming to reach home plate for a score of 4-0 at the end of the third inning.
The Scots continued to prove themselves in the fourth inning with an RBI off a triple from Ullrich to give Jessica Eva (Morrice, M) a run. Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, M) was walked by the Calvin pitcher and advanced to second for Ullrich to score on a wild pitch, 6-0.
The Knights found themselves on the board in the fifth inning off an error from third base to put Calvin at 6-1. They grabbed one more run at the top of the sixth inning off a single to right field that brought a Calvin runner in, 6-2. The seventh inning remained untouched for a final score of 6-2 and a win for the Scots.
Ullrich notched two runs, two hits, and one RBI. Falejczyk posted two hits and two RBI's. Daniella Little (Wheaton, IL) added five strikeouts on the day.
Next, the Scots head back to Alma for their next matchup against Saint Mary's College on Saturday, April 9.
