Alma split games on final day in Georgia

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Alma College softball team competed in the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Tournament on Sunday, March 6. The Scots went one and one on the day with a 2-1 win over Transylvania University (KY) and a 10-3 loss to East Texas Baptist University. The Scots finished the trip with a 4-2 record. 

In the first game of the day, both teams were kept off the board in the first inning. Transylvania scored their only run if the game in the bottom of the second, taking the lead 1-0. Alma looked to respond in the third inning, starting with a lead off double to left field from Aynslee Koutz (St. Louis, MI). Two batters later, Haley Ullrich (Elk River, MN) singled to second base, allowing Koutz to reach third safely. The following batter, Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, MI) reached first on an error with Ullrich advancing to second and Koutz reached home to tie the game at one apiece. Emma Fraser (Alpena, MI) would also reach first on an error to load the bases for Alma. Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, MI) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, but Ullrich would tag up and score another run for the Scots. Ullrich pitched a complete game for the Scots and recorded only one earned run with six strikeouts. Griffith and Terwilliger recorded one RBI each and Jessica Eva (Morrice, MI) added another stolen base to her season total.  

In the final game of the trip, Alma looked to head back to the north with another win. Alma let up one run in the top of the first but looked to rebuttal in the bottom of the inning. Leading off the game for the Scots, Ullrich would start the pursuit with a double. Griffith following behind also doubled which allowed for Ullrich to score and tie the game. Alma would end the first tied with the Tigers. East Texas would add 7 unanswered runs through the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead. Alma answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a homerun from Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattan, IL), making the score 8-2. The Tigers added two additional runs in the top of the sixth, pushing the score to 10-2. In the bottom of the sixth, after two walks allowing two Scots to get on base, Laiken Ex (Sterling, MI) singled allowing for one run to score, ultimately creating the final score of 10-3. Adding an RBI to their season total included Griffith, Falejczyk, and Ex.  

Alma will return home to Michigan before going back on the road to take on Defiance College on Thursday, March 10.
