ALMA, Mich. -- The Alma College softball team posted two wins against Ohio Northern University on Monday, March 21.
The Scots rallied in the bottom of the 6th inning by scoring four runs in game two of a double header with Ohio Northern University to pull out the win in dramatic fashion 5-4 to complete the sweep. Alma won the first game 6-2.
In the night cap, Ohio Northern's University pitcher, Ashley Lenser kept the Scots quiet for most of the game only allowing one run through five innings. ONU scored two runs in their half of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Alma cut the lead to one with a leadoff double by Chloe Deckrow (Grand Rapids, MI). Amelia Thorne (Grand Ledge) came in to pinch run for Deckrow and advanced to third on a ground out to second base by Hannah Fleming (Rogers City) and later scored on a pass ball.
Alma's pitcher Ella Little (Wheaton, IL) was in control for most of the game but ran into trouble in the top of the 6th. Back to back singles by ONU brought in a pitcher change bringing Haley Ullrich (Elk River, MN). A fielder's choice, and two more singles would bring two more runs across the plate for ONU to increase their lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth the rally began with a single by Jessica Eva (Morrice, MI, followed by a double by Ullrich scoring Eva all the way from first base. Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, MI) would ground out advancing Ullrich. Emma Fraser (Alpena, MI) hit a RBI double to centerfield and advanced to third on an error on the next pitch hit by Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattanville, IL). Kylie Halverson pinched ran for Falejczyk and a single by Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, MI) drove in Fraser to tie the game. Hadyn Terwilliger (Mt. Pleasant, MI) hit a softliner up the middle which was misplayed to allow Halverson and the winning run to score.
The ONU Bears would not go away lightly putting two runners on base with two outs before Ullrich got the last batter to fly out. Ullrich earned the win for her 7th of the season. Little gave up four hits, 2 ERs, and struck out 3.
In game one ONU stuck first in the second inning scoring an unearned run on an error and double. Alma started their offense in the 3rd inning with a walk to Ullrich, Griffith was hit by a pitch, Fraser would hit a soft liner to right field to load the bases and with two outs Hannah Fleming hit a 2 RBI single to left. Terwilliger was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Koutz was hit by a pitch to plate the 3rd run of the inning. In the fourth Griffith sliced a triple right field, Fraser was walked and Thorne pinched ran for Fraser. Griffith would then score on a double steal with Thorne to increase the Scots lead to 4-1.
Falejczyk led off the sixth inning with her 4th homerun of the year. Fleming and Terwilliger would follow with singles and Dani Dumoulin (Goodrich, MI) would drive in Fleming to complete the scoring for Alma.
ONU managed to score another run in their half of the seventh but Ullrich quieted the rally with a ground out to Koutz at second base.
The wins puts the Scots overall record at 13-7. They hit the road again this weekend as they travel to Mount Saint Joe University on Saturday, March 26th and Anderson University on Sunday, March 27th.
