Box Score 2 The softball team took advantage of a sunny, 60-degree day in Mid-March and traveled to Heidelberg University for a non-conference double header on Sunday. The Scots used two quality pitching performances and timely hitting to sweep Heidelberg 7-1 and 8-0 in five innings to improve their overall record to 11-7. Haley Ullrich (Elk River, MN) took to the mound in the opener earning her 6th win of the season. She allowed four hits, one walk and 1 earned run while striking out 9.
In the top of the first inning Ullrich led off with a single to leftfield. Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, MI) sacrifice Ullrich who advanced to third base on the play. One batter later, Emma Fraser (Alpena, MI) hit a single to left field to score Ullrich. The Scots plated single runs in the second and third innings. With one out in the second inning Chloe Deckrow (Grand Rapids, MI) , hit a single to center which was followed up with a bunt single by Jessica Eva (Morrice, MI) to put two runners on base for Ullrich. She laced an RBI single to Centerfield to put the Scots up 2-0. In the 3rd inning Fraser led off with a single to center field, Kylie Halverson (Grand Rapids, MI) pinched ran for Fraser and Hadyn Terwilliger (Mt. Pleasant, MI) sacrifice Halverson to second base. Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattanville, IL) stepped up to the plate and drove home Halverson to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Scots went quietly in the 4th inning however, Heidelberg scored their only run for the day on a single and a double. Ullrich would retire the next 8 of 10 batters including 5 strikeouts.
Alma would score two more runs in the fifth inning on singles by Griffith and Fraser, a sacrifice bunt by Terwilliger and a two RBI single by Falejczyk. Two more insurance runs were added in the sixth with a base on balls to Deckrow, who was pinched ran for by Ameila Thorne (Grand Ledge) a walk to Aynslee Koutz (St. Louis, MI), Ullrich hit into a fielders' choice and Griffith drove a single to right field driving in Koutz and Ullrich also scored on an errant throw.
In the second game Ella Little (Wheaton, IL) threw a shutout to improve to 5-2 on the year in a five-inning run rule game. She gave up 4 hits and struck out 6 without a walk. Alma struck first with a run in the second inning on a single by Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, MI) and Terwilliger drove a ball to the centerfielder fence to score Fleming.
In the top of the third inning Alma Scored 7 runs to put the game away. Ullrich opened the frame with a single to center, Fraser doubled to Centerfield and Falejczyk hit a 2 RBI single up the middle. Deckrow followed with her own single to rightfield, Fleming laced a single to leftfield, Terwilliger smacked an RBI single to center and with bases loaded Koutz cleared the bases with a triple to right centerfield. Koutz would score on the fielder's choice on a Jessica Eva (Morrice, MI) bunt to complete the Scots third inning.
The Scots will face Ohio Northern University on Monday, March 21 at Scots Park for a DH at 3 pm.
