Alma wins in home-opener

The Alma College Softball team opened its home schedule on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Manchester College by identical scores of 10-0 to improve their overall record to 9-7. The Scots are 8-2 in their last 10 games. In the opener Sr. Haley Ullrich (Elk River, MN) picked up her sixth win of season going the distance, giving up 3 hits and striking out 11 in a five-inning game. She helped her own cause with a bang by hitting her 5th homerun leading off the first   inning to put the Scots up 1-0. The Scots would score 8 more runs in the first inning including Ullrich's 6th homerun of season. Junior, Emma Fraser (Alpena, MI), SR, Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, MI), SR, Chloe Deckrow (Grandville, MI) and Jr, Jessica Eva (Morrice, MI) all had RBIs in the inning. In the fourth inning with one out, Deckrow reached base on a fielder's choice, followed by a walk to Aynslee Koutz (St. Louis, MI), Eva was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ullrich walked to score Deckrow closing out the offense in the first game. 

 

In game two, Junior Ella Little (Wheaton, IL) picked up her fifth win of the season in the five-inning game. She gave up three hits while striking out three batters. The Scots offense picked where they left off in game one. Ullrich led off the first inning with her 7th homerun of the season to start the scoring. With one out Senior Hadyn Terwiliger (Mt. Pleasant, MI) hit a single to centerfield and Senior, Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattan, IL) knocked her second Homerun of the season to left field putting the Scots up 3-0. Little retired the next three batters in a row for Manchester's second inning. Alma would score two more runs in their half of the second inning with walks to Chloe Deckrow, Junior, Aynslee Koutz (St. Louis, MI) and Ullrich to load the bases. Junior Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, MI) laced a double to right center field scoring Deckrow and Koutz to put the Scots up 5-0.

 

Manchester was able to put two runners on base in the 3rd with a single to leftfield and a walk but Little secured the final out with a flyball to centerfield. Alma would put the game out of reach by scoring five runs in their half of the 3rd inning. Falejczyk led off the inning with a single to centerfield. Freshman, Kylie Halverson (Grand Rapids, MI) pinched ran for Falejczyk and Hannah Fleming slapped a triple to center scoring Halverson. Deckrow grounded out to second base to plate Fleming. With two outs Eva singled to shortstop, Ullrich walked, Griffith hit a single to right field driving in Eva and Fraser drove in the final two runs with a double to left center. Little would do the rest over the next two innings allowing only 1 hit.

 

The Scots travel to Heidelberg University on Sunday, March 20th at 2 pm in a make up due to rain. The Non-Conference schedule continues on Monday, March 21st when Ohio Northern University comes to Scots Park for a doubleheader at 3 pm.
